I am just wondering if celiac and gluten intolerance were the same thing? Can you have gluten intolerance and not have celiac? What is the difference, and what about symptoms.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have 1 positive test for celiac but negative biopsies. My dr was so certain that I had celiac, that after my first neg. biopsy he did another endoscopic, and did 5 biopsies that time, which all came back neg. So now he's thinking that i am not celiac. He is having me on a gluten diet for the next 3 months and he's doing blood work every 4 weeks and then he wants me to go gluten free for 3 months with blood test every 4 weeks. I also have chronic pancreatitis. I've had MRI's and C-T scan which were all normal. also my endoscopic showed that my pancreas looked good. So he's thinking that maybe the gluten had something to do with it?

My dr did have me on a gluten free diet for 1 month and during that time I felt great. No abdominal pain, bloating, gas diarrhea etc. My lipase(pancreas) enzymes went from 586 to 130. My energy was higher, my moods felt better. And blood work looked better too.

Any thoughts??

THe symptoms can be exactly the same. Some will never test positive for Celiac and have all the same terrible problems that gluten can cause. You obviously have one or the other, based on positive dietary response. Keep up the good work!

If going of the gluten fixed the problem why try to find another solution.

Personalty if any doctor told me to go back on gluten I would look at him like he was mad.

Then argue with him. If he did not listen to my reasoning I would leave and not come back.

I do not say this lightly. Gluten nearly killed me.

Would you tell a person with a peanut allergy to try peanuts again just to see if the breating problem

comes back?

I may sound a little radical but if I lost 6 inches of my gut in two weeks( from gas and bloat), went from 15 hours of sleep a day to 9 and went from 1 fibro attack a week to one every three months just from cutting out gluten. Why would I do that to my body again? Your blood work already gave you the answer you need. Tell him to get a different ginny pig.

With the great response to the diet and the positive blood test I would stay gluten free and not look back. You have 22 ft of small intestine and damage can be patchy and get missed. IMHO your doctor is one who is going to torture you until you are damaged enough to make him happy to diagnose. Some doctors would diagnose you based on your blood work and the positive response to the diet. I would consider myself celiac and not look back. IMHO there is no difference between gluten intolerant and celiac. Both labels need a fully compliant gluten free life.

Get a full copy of the endo report and post the findings here. Some doctors miss the early celiac stages or are unaware of what damage to look for before the villi are totally destroyed. We have a lot of very knowledgeable folks here who may be able to tell if the test was indeed a positive but your doctor didn't know fully what to look for.

I have seen postings from people who repeatedly had negative biopsies, and when they had the video capsule endoscopy, either the celiac was clearly visible or it was at the wrong end of the small intestine.

That biopsy business is not that accurate...

Go by the blood tests and how you feel.

Another thing to consider is, that lyme patients often have positive blood tests but negative biopsies, and react to gluten just like celiacs. They are said to get better after successful treatment for lyme. thye ahve to be just as strict gluten free as any ordinary celiac. (but can tolerate gluten afterwards)

That is a valid question.  Unfortunately the short answer is slim to none.  Be proactive, when the diagnosis process is completed, start GFD.  Remember also that the western diet is deficient in many nutrients that governments require fortification.  Read the side of a breakfast cereal box. Anti-tTG antibodies has superseded older serological tests It has a strong sensitivity (99%) and specificity (>90%) for identifying celiac disease. A list of symptoms linked to Celiac is below.  No one seems to be tracking it, but I suspect that those with elevated ttg, but not diagnosed with Celiac Disease, are diagnosed with celiac disease many years later or just die, misdiagnosed.  Wheat has a very significant role in our economy and society.  And it is addictive.  Anti-tTG antibodies can be elevated without gluten intake in cases of other autoimmune diseases, certain infections, and inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. Transient increases have been observed during infections such as Epstein-Barr virus.Some autoimmune disorders including hepatitis and biliary cirrhosis, gall bladder disease. Then, at 65 they are told you have Ciliac Disease. Milk protein has been connected to elevated levels.   Except for Ireland and New Zealand where almost all dairy cows are grass fed, commercial diaries feed cows TMR Total Mixed Rations which include hay, silage, grains and concentrate, protein supplements, vitamins and minerals, byproducts and feed additives. Up to 80% of their diet is food that cannot be eaten by humans. Byproducts of cotton seeds, citrus pulp, brewer’s grains (wheat and barley, rye, malt, candy waste, bakery waste. The wheat, barley and rye become molecules in the milk protein and can trigger tTg Iga in persons suseptible to Celiac. I can drink Grass fed milk, it tastes better, like the milk the milkman delivered in the 50's.  If I drink commercial or Organic milk at bedtime I wake with indigestion.

      I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods.       I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

      If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.
