Other Allergy Questions

My son had a blood allergy test done and it came back with a reaction to the following: barley, cabbage, carrots, corn, navy beans, oranges, peanut, potato, rye, tomato, wheat. Our whole family has been on the gluten free diet so thats not a shocker to see those. My questions come in with the other items. Some are members of the nightshade family, some the apiacea family, some the cruciferous family, and then the grass family. In your experience do you think that he could have issues with the entire family or could it just be selective? We go back in next week to see the allergy specialist and I have a lot of questions for him, but I think the experience of you guys is far more knowledgable than most doctors! Also do you think that allergies can be like celiacs and be a genetic issue that is common among family members? Any insight or experience would be great.

Thanks!

Jeannie

Which blood test did your son take? Did that test for IgE (immediate reaction) or IgG or IgA (delayed reaction) allergies. My husband and I both took the ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) test for IgG delayed reaction allergies. We both had a range of reactions, some low, some medium and some high.

My naturopathic doc advised us to consider the overall pattern of our results. If we had many 'reaction' scores, we should consider only the highest scores. I disregarded any reaction in the 'lows' or even higher range of no reaction. I never noticed any physical reaction to those foods anyway.

Also consider your son's allergy reactions. Does he usually react with gut symptoms or headaches or joint pain or what? Has he ever reacted to the foods to which he showed some test significance?

My doc says people don't necessarily react to all foods in a category (like nightshades or cruciferous vegies). Their bodies really can pick and choose various fooods. For example my husband tested positive to red grapes and gets bad headaches when he eats those or raisins. However, he doesn't have problems with green grapes. Also he tested positive to almonds, but he can eat other nuts.

Hope that helps.
