Thirsty After Going Gluten Free

Hello everyone!

Since going gluten-free (about 3 weeks now) I have noticed some improvements, but I have also noticed some things that aren't necessarily the greatest. One thing is that I seem to be very thirsty with dry mouth, and feel like I have 24 hour bad breath. Has anyone else experienced this???

One other q'n....gluten-free also ends up meaning sugar free, since we are eating less processed foods that are usually laden with sugar. My q'n is: Is it bad to have NO sugar and simply rely on fruits (say 2-3 per day) and carbs????

Skar

I don't know about your first question, but I can answer your second! The answer is "no". It will not hurt you at all to completely do without processed sugar. Your body will utilize the sugars that are naturally in other foods, and will probably be healthier for it. Sugar is a form of energy, just like carbs. Your body will convert the carbs into energy for you. If you think about it, sugar has not been around for all of eternity in the form we use it in. Cavemen didn't process sugar cane, beets, and maple sap just for the sweetness. They ate the fruits and veggies in their natural state. We can do that, too, it is just a matter of wanting to.

How much water do you drink every day? When you get thirsty that means you are already low on water. Maybe try drinking 8 glasses of water a day and see if that still stays with you.

For the 2nd ?- It won't hurt you...processed sugars are bad for you. The fruits have a natural sugar that is better for you anyway.

Yes, being thirsty is a problem with me when I've gotten into an accidental contamination. As well as the awful fuzz mouth. However, being thirsty is a possible sign of diabetes ... have you been tested? Perhaps you will want to eliminate that possiblility first! ;)

Thirst can also be a sign of other things such as thyroid troubles. Keep an eye on it.

Also, if you cut a lot of carbs you will experience exactly those symptoms. People on Atkins, especially when they first start have a lot of issues with being thirsty and bad breath. They call it "low carber breath". I don't know the science behind it but it does happen. I don't *think* it happened to me but I did chew a lot of gum during the time I was low carbing. Also drank *a lot* of water.

It might just be an adjustment phase you are going through.

Take care

The bad breath from a low carb diet comes from your body switching from burning carbs to burning body fat for energy. I experienced this when I went on the Atkins diet. Once I got to the maintenance stage the bad breath went away because you switch from a diet that is mostly fat and protien to one that has a balance of protien, fuits and vegetables. I was always thirsty before the gluten-free diet but don't experience it now. Not eating processed sugar is a good thing. That is not sugar in its natural form.

Hi, thank you for the quick reply! I was diagnosed about 5 years ago I think,  I try to be extremely careful with what I eat so I don't get cross contamination. I used to get little sores in my mouth when I was little, usually from sucking on hard candy, but L-lisene would clear it right up. I got that Nasal Navage thing and used it twice and that's when I thought I had a sinus infection. So I got a z pack. Then I noticed my tongue was coated and it was white except right down the middle which was more brown and crusty, like the corners of my mouth. I also have dry mouth and I went way too long before I started treating it. So then I had some kind of huge pill and Nystatin mouthwash. My mother in law's new husband ( they live upstairs) started complaining of exactly the same symptoms as me. He went to urgent care, they said it wasn't thrush, it was shingles. We both went to our dentist's for cleanings, I don't have insurance so I really couldn't tell they cleaned my teeth at all. But she said my mouth looked good, all cleared up. I had a day and a half of no pain and then it came right back. So I got more pills and miracle mouthwash. There are times it feels like dry socket and times it feels like it's bleeding but it's not. I don't see any gum or facial swelling, I did see a couple of tiny ulcers on my bottom lip, roof of my mouth is still sore, and my tongue and cheeks are still a little coated. I am just at a loss. My mother in law's husband, they  took swabs and called back a week later and said it was a new herpes variant virus that is going around but not contagious. He was cured after a week! And I'm going on 3 months 😭

The thiamax and benfo I ordered should come tomorrow. I will start Friday ny b complex the benfo and thiamax for breakfast. I haven't ordered magnesium yet. I wanted to start with this first then add magnesium. Should it be fine to take b complex the thia/benfo and eventually magnesium at breakfast together? Thanks

What have you taken so far?  and when?

Welcome to the forum, @Charlie1946, How long have you been diagnosed with Celiac disease? Do you take any nutritional supplements? Vitamins? Herbal medicine? Do you eat processed gluten free facsimile foods? Is your diet high in carbohydrates?   Many vitamin deficiencies can contribute to poor oral health.  Vitamin C, Cobalamine B12, Thiamine B 1, Riboflavin B 2 and Pyridoxine B6, to name a few.   For pain, a combination of Thiamine, B12 and Pyridoxine B 6 have analgesic properties.  They work together to relieve pain better than over-the-counter pain relievers, imho.

Welcome to the celiac.com family, @Charlie1946! I have not experienced what you are going through except possibly accelerated loss of enamel and receding gums, to some extent, anyway. But I can tell you that thrush and canker sores have been reported by other members of this online community. Let me ask you some questions. First, how long ago were you diagnosed with celiac disease? Second, are you consistent with the gluten-free diet? Third, have you recently been on a course of antibiotics? Thrush often follows on the heels of being on a course of antibiotics because the antibiotics kill off the good bacteria the keep yeast and fungi in check.
