Cycling - Better Balance But Still Hard After Going Gluten Free

The good part is that since going gluten free 4 months ago I've seen an incredible improvement in my ability to ride my bike. My balance is better which I'm hoping is gluten ataxia going away. Have others had this happen?

The hard part is I still get drained of energy long before I'm physically tired.

I am over 40 so I've been wondering if its age but I see nothing on the internet to suggest that's true so I'm wondering if it's the celiac. Do others have this symptom? If so has it changed over time? or with supplements?

I've been free of gluten for a month. I still haven't gotten on my bike (it's old and crappy) but I've been going to yoga and feeling much more comfortable in my body. However, the last time I went I made it 30 mins into the session and suddenly felt completely drained of energy (I had been in the gym running for 10 minutes before the session). I do know I hadn't eaten a good breakfast that morning- just a bowl of cereal rather than eggs. I never had a balance problem so it could be true that it's the celiac diet and learning how to balance the carbs well without pasta and bread.

With me, it wasn't age, and I'm 50. It went away slowly. Now, I went riding with someone 10 years younger with whom I'm training, and I did better than she did. It also took some fine tuning of my diet. Be patient and check your diet carefully. It is so nice to be athletic again after having no energy for many years. I have been keeping a rowing log for years and I'm doing better now than I did when I started it 20 years ago.

I thought that a lot of my symptoms were related to aging: ridges in my fingernails, pain in my feet, soreness in my knees, and a big one - apparent infertility. When I realized I was gluten intolerant, I read that every single one of my symptoms could be traced back to that. I raised all of these symptoms with my acupuncturist and asked her if they could be from aging. She shook her head: my symptoms are not from age, but from imbalances (caused by eating gluten for so long).

Anyway, these days I get exhausted after walking a mile. Last summer, I rode my bike 50 miles in a day. I have accepted that I'm healing. (And I'm hoping that next summer, I'll be riding 60 miles in a day :)

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
