Just been a couple of days off of gluten, but so far I my GI symptoms have been getting worse. Did anyone feel worse before feeling better?

I certainly felt worse for a good week or two. Mine was mainly withdrawing from sugar & carbs. I felt like I had been hit by a semi! Could barely get out of bed. As far as the GI symptoms worsening, I don't have much advice other than what came out of me the first 2 weeks off gluten was other worldly B) . I guess my body was detoxing itself. I went on the Paleo diet initially and now I'm sort of doing the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Basically, meat, veggies, fruits. Nothing processed. I feel like a new person now as I'm 8 weeks into my gluten-free diet, but I am fatigued. I think that's all my low vitamins. I'm taking heaps of supplements to combat that. Hopefully some others will chime in soon about the GI symptoms worsening. I hope you get some relief soon!!

Many feel worse for a bit before feeling better. It can also take some time to get the hang of the gluten free lifestyle. It is a good idea to drop dairy at first also and go with a whole food unprocessed diet. Eat mostly meats, chicken, seafood, fresh and unprocessed, fruits and veggies, cook these as your tummy will have an easier time digesting them, beans and rice, potatoes and sweet potatoes etc. Skip the specialty gluten free foods until you have healed a bit and make sure you have deglutened your kitchen.

It took me 6 months for me to get better! But I DID get better

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
