So Confused?

I have been gluten free for 8 days. I have felt like I had the flu for most of them but my stomach was fine. I have not had D in a looong time even before going gluten free. I felt great today and thought I finally turned a corner. Then, right after dinner I had awful D with gas and stomach rumbling. ugh. Why would D start now? Did I get glutened? Or is this just another stage in the gluten withdrawl? Anyone have a similar experience?

It is likely you got glutened IMHO. What are you eating? Hopefully it is mostly unprocessed foods as those are safer, especially when we are first diagnosed. You also should eliminate dairy for a bit until you heal. The 'flu' type feeling and depression are common with withdrawl but the D is IMHO more an indication of accidental gluten. We do have some ups and downs at first hang in there.

Thanks so much for your reply. Aside from this website I feel so alone in this issue. I have been eating brown rice, tomatos, cheese, gluten-free pretzels, gluten-free acai sorbet, frozen veggies(not marked gluten-free but i assume they are, right?), chicken (cooked in olive oil in a pan i washed very well), frozen blueberries...not much else. The D occurred after the chicken, cheese, veggie meal. It had to be something in that. I have three kids so I am no stranger to the somach viruses but this feels nothing like that. Ugh. Have I set myself back so far or ma I feel ok again tomorrow. This is really hard! lol Thanks again for any help!

Was there any flour or other food covering on the chicken? Who knows, maybe some of the gluten-fee stuff you're now eating is not settling well in your tummy.

I would encourage you to drop the cheese for a bit. Many of us have a hard time with it until we are well healed. After you heal a bit then add dairy back in and see if it is an issue.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.

What is the best gluten free scanner app? I have the "gluten-free Scanner" app. I scanned an almond joy and it says it contains gluten when the package is labeled gluten free

Certainly, it would b wise to have a gene test done if your physician is open to it as it would provide some more data to understand what's going on. But keep in mind that the genetic test for celiac disease cannot be used as to diagnose celiac disease, only to establish the potential to develop active celiac disease. About 40% of the general population possess one or both of the primary genes known to be associated with the development of active celiac disease but only about 1% of the population actually develop active celiac disease. So, the gene test is an effective "rule out" tool but not an effective diagnostic tool.

Had Quaker gluten-free oatmeal last night and my stomach is a mess today. NO flu but def stomach stuff. Anyone else?

So you would be good with the diagnosis and not worry to check genetics etc etc? Appreciate your words!
