Fried Fish

Anyone have any suggestions for what type of flour would work best for dredging before frying? My DH does a great fish fry with potatoe flakes, which I think we can do safely. I just don't know what flour would work best for the initial dredge. Any suggestions?

Hi. I haven't tried frying fish since gluten-free but you might try corn starch. I think it might work better than rice flour. I am from the south and we use cornmeal a lot for coating and frying.

I use Pamela's pancake and baking mix. Might not be the most cost effective thing to use, but I always have some on hand and I like the fact that it has almond meal in it. Works great...I've had no complaints.

gluten-free Bisquick would be another alternative if you can find it.

I use rice flour all the time for the first dredging. It works just fine. I would think any gluten free flour (buckwheat, all purpose, rice, etc.) would work just as well.

Usually this is what I do, coat the fish with corn starch

, then dip into whisked egg, then coat with rolled oats and bake. It turns out crunchy too just like fried fish :)

(and you also can add some dried herb or chopped parsley in the egg for more flavour.)

According to a fish and chips place in Portland, rice flour. They're stuff just happens to be gluten free because rice flour gave the best results. :)

Try "glutenous" rice flour (it is gluten free). I haven't tried it on fish but it makes a great breading for chicken or fried eggplant.

Last week I did fried catfish filets and got raves:

Mist filets with water. (I use a spray bottle I bought at a beauty supply store)

Salt and pepper liberally.

Dredge in yellow cornmeal. (I use plain grocery store, but look for gluten-free if you are particularly sensitive. I have had no problems with the regular store brand.)

Fry in hot (360 degree)deep peanut oil until golden brown and floating.

This gives you a down home southern fish.

Great Idea's thanks! My freezer is starting to overflow with fish, so we have to do a fish fry. Love all the great ideas!!!

      Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

      Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

      Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

      Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
