Hi,

This is so weird. I've always been able to eat peanuts, peanut butter, etc. But just about the time they physical symptons of celiacs was showing up (about 1 1/2 months ago) I was also getting a stomache from peanuts. I thought it was coincidental ... but had some m&m peanuts last night and paid for it with super size tummy ache all night long. What is with this? Has my body just gone nutso? I am gluten-free - I would say 100%, but figure it's at least 99%. I only eat from the safe list....

Thanks

Ann

Maybe you have problems with peanuts as well. Have you considered maybe getting a allergy or intolerance test done to check for that? That may be a good idea. Also, you may want to keep a food journal and then see if there is a correlation between any food and you getting sick. If your body doesn't like peanuts then stay away from them. Peanuts are a food that alot of people react to.

Hi,

I work in a school ... I know all about the peanut allergy thing. But I never, ever had a problem before I had the physical symptons of celiacs. I lived on peanut butter, at candy with it in it, ate peanuts at parties, etc. And thanks for the suggestion of the allergy tests - but I'll just stay away from them for now on. Not worth the outcome. I was just curious if anyone else found that food they previously tolerated now causes them problems.

Thanks!

Sometimes in the past when I'd get glutened I noticed that it would take several days to go back and eat something with peanuts. I was tested for peanut intolerance and it came back negative. Maybe stomach is too delicate after being glutened. I can't eat too many of those M&Ms cause they give me a stomach ache too.

Noneformethanks Newbie

When I first figured this out, peanuts were a big problem for me, as well. But, at over a year being gluten-free, I tried them again, a wee bit at a time. No problems now! Peanut M&M's , especially the new dark chocolate, are a new diet staple for me now! :)

I think it's been said before, that as our guts heal, we can perhaps tolerate foods that earlier were a problem.

This is a very individual disease; you will figure it out,

Thanks! I thought my gut was OK, but I guess not. I did know that, right before my stomach blew up that first time, I was eating wheat thins, popcorn, peanuts & apple juice. Do NOT even ask. Grains, vegetable, protein & fruit if you want me to justify the diet  It's taken me some time to understand that my tummy is still sensitive, although this is the first time in 1 1/2 months that it's hurt again. I truly do stay gluten-free. Now I have to go find out if Ben & Jerry's New York Super Chunk is OK. I'll pick out the nuts ....

I do not know what I'd do without this board. Got tested for ITP and Lupus today - which is a possibility of having both - and my thryoid is slightly enlarged, although the thyroid function test came back normal. It's like my warranty has run out and now all my parts are failing!

I'm sorry you feel so bad and totally understand. I would stay away from the Wheat Thins and replace with maybe some Rice Crackers and keep in mind that popcorn and apple juice have lots of fiber and you know what that does. I'd switch to Welch's Grape Juice instead of the apple juice. To be honest I'd wait a few days maybe even a week before popcorn (make sure its Orville brand). I hope you feel better soon.

Peanut butter seems to give my 15 month a tummy ache too. I don't understand it. He has been on the gluten-free diet for about six weeks and everytime he gets PB he cries and fusses and eats cruddy the rest of the day. I actually was looking to see if I was giving him gluten by accident, but it seems like the PB.

Eloisa,

Orville? Is that the only kind that is safe? That's OK with me, but I didn't realize it. And wheat thins are a thing of the past; never to cross these lips again. :D

Ann,

Orville's the only one I know of and I think someone posted about it too.

Also AMC popcorn is okay too.

Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.
