Tums

So I was reading my tums bottle today to see what the maximum number I could safely have in a day was and read that they contain gluten (The website said it's not a filler, but could be present in ingredients from suppliers. I haven't been overly sick, but am now wondering if some of what I thought were pregnancy side affects might be related to the fact that I've been chowing down on so many tums). I am totally freaking out because I swear I read that they were on the safe list.

What do you guys do for heartburn?

Prilosec is gluten-free. My best advice is go to Walgreen's and ask the pharmacist. They have a list, or should have, of over the counter gluten-free meds. I know ours called the makers to verify that Prilosec was indeed gluten-free.

we've been discussing prilosec and other proton pump inhibitors lately- here's one of the threads:

im not preaching- i did in fact take a little Zantac months ago- within a 2 week period because i had an ulcer.

but- the best thing you can do is change your diet and lifestyle and habits- to avoid the GERD...and if you have to take something- try an antacid like tums (if gluten free), or PeptoBismol, or some baking soda and water, or calcium citrate powder mixed with water.

Prilosec, Zantac, Aciphex, Prevacid, etc... (unless you're in the middle of a burning ulcer) will do more damage than good- they can shut down your stomach... and you need to be able to make acid to digest.

the real issue is that Espohageal flap not staying shut.

for me, Gluten was my biggest contributor to GERD. the only other time i REALLY had a problem with Acid Reflux is when i had an ulcer- from H.Pylori- which thrive in a low acidic stomach.

sorry for rambling... just trying to help- years ago i took Zantac daily for 4 years, thinking my uneasy stomach and nausea was from too much acid... and i ended up with Hypochlorhydia, H.Pylori, and digestive problems.

Her heartburn is a side effect of having a baby growing in her stomach not the food she is eating.

oops. sorry. ya, not too much you can do about anatomy and the stomach being pushed up.

if pregnant tho- all the more reason to not take meds.

I'm currently pregnant and I use Tums Wintergreen to deal with the heartburn associated with pregnancy. It does NOT contain gluten and their website confirms this.

"Although we do not use gluten as a filler in TUMS, there may be trace amounts of gluten in TUMS Smoothies Assorted Fruit and Berry Fusion flavors via ingredients that are supplied by outside vendors. Other products of TUMS do not contain gluten."

Also, before and during my diagnosis with celiac disease, I was put on Prilosec and Zantac due to major acid reflux damage in my esophagus. That stuff is HORRIBLE and I will never take it again. It caused frequent awful headaches, and is a nightmare to try to discontinue once you've started. It was quite a process, and while it was necessary to allow my esophagus to heal, I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't have that sort of damage. If you do some research on those meds you will find out a lot of negative things. My heartburn problem went away thankfully once I was gluten free, and has only returned now that I am further along in my pregnancy and my stomach is pressing upwards. I am also very short waisted which I think has something to do with it. Not much room there! Anyway, if you get another flavor of Tums other than the Fruit and Berry Fusion kind, then it will be gluten free.

first off, yes most tums are gluten-free!!! yay!!!! i'm taking the tropical fruit ultimate 1000 or whatever they're called and they are gluten-free. i only take them occasionally but i just might be rethinking that, to more if i now might want to stop my priolosec. you guys have gotten me a little concerned. i've been taking omerperazole for about 3 yrs and just started the prilosec for reflux and heartburn! i'm 15 weeks preggi, and i ALWAYS suffer from heartburn durning pregnancy.

can someone list why we shouldn't be taking the prilosec?

thanks!

im sorry- but if you've been taking omeprazole for 3 years and now you're taking prilosec-> you probably have a stomach that doesnt make adequate stomach acid to digest and absorb food. the stuff can literally shut down your stomach. you could still get heartburn/reflux- which is not from excess stomach acid- it's from that esophageal flap opening up- which happens when you 1. have low stomach acid 2. eat food or drink that opens it, or smokes, or is stressed 3. or pregnant.

i think the drugs DEFINITELY have a place-> if you've got an ulcer, or barrets esophagus. but it should only be temporary, as it will cause more problems down the road.

i would think the tums, or drinking calcium citrate mixed with water... or even baking soda&water would help combat the acid without shutting down your stomach.

now the discomfort from being pregnant- i cannot relate to- and i empathize.

i DID just look on the net- and of course everyone has conflicting advice on safety during pregnancy.

i, personally wouldn't take it while pregnant. you kind of have to go with your own personal instinct sometimes- and have a good dialogue with your doctor.

because every doc has a different opinion- i tend to listen to myself too. for example: some docs say it's fine to drink coffee while pregnant... i wouldnt.

so, you just have to consult with your doc.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I've never had what I would call cronic heart burn. It had pretty much gone away after being gluten-free and then kicked back in with the pregnancy. Thanks for the advise on the other tums flavors. The answer on the FAQ section of the tums website about gluten was not clear that certain flavors were ok, so I'm glad to have the feedback. I preferred the smoothies fruit and mixed berrie, but something is better than nothing.

Does anyone know anything about rolaids?

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

Please do more research before you settle on nicotine. Dr. Paul New house is a psychiatrist.  His latest study involves the effect of nicotine patches on Late Life Depression which has reached no long term conclusions about the benefits.   Effects of open-label transdermal nicotine antidepressant augmentation on affective symptoms and executive function in late-life depression https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39009312/   I'm approaching the subject from the Microbiologist's point of view which shows nicotine blocks Thiamine B1 uptake and usage:   Chronic Nicotine Exposure In Vivo and In Vitro Inhibits Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Uptake by Pancreatic Acinar Cells https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26633299/   While supplementation with thiamine in the form Benfotiamine can protect from damage done by  nicotine: Benfotiamine attenuates nicotine and uric acid-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction in the rat https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18951979/   I suggest you study the beneficial effects of Thiamine (Benfotiamine and TTFD) on the body and mental health done by Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Chandler Marrs.  Dr. Lonsdale had studied thiamine over fifty years.   Hiding in Plain Sight: Modern Thiamine Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/ I suggest you read their book Thiamine Deficiency Disease, Dysautonomia, and High Calorie Malnutrition.     Celiac Disease is a disease of malabsorption causing malnutrition.  Thiamine and benfotiamine: Focus on their therapeutic potential https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10682628/

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.
