Low Albumin After Strict gluten-free Diet

My daughter was diagnosed with Celiac since July of this year. We've been on a strict diet and have done the following: Cook 95% of meals at home using all gluten-free products, replaced toaster, replaced cookware and utensils, replaced toothepaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, cream, etc., only drink diet sprite/z-up, propel, and Life water.

She was also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes last August and is Downs' Syndrome with hypothryoidism.

So her vitamin levels are all now up to the norm and she seems to feel a little better.

New blood test results as of this week are:

Albumin 1.7

Calcium 7.1

Vitamin D and B12 are all normal now

Iron is high, but was on supplements and recently taken off

Iron 167

Iron binding capacity - 175

Iron Sat - 95

She also has swellen of the feet, legs and abdomen and low blood pressure 78/55

Anyone have any idea why her albumin would be this low and the other factors?

Hi there. This is probably not a gluten-related problem. Your doctors need to be following up the low blood pressure, edema, and low albumin. Your daughter has two major medical conditions with the type 1 diabetes and Down's so it wouldn't be appropriate for folks on the board to make guesses.

I can't say that I know what is causing her edema and low albumin, but I do know there are many possible causes of edema (swelling). I get swollen feet and ankles when I eat soy, or most any other food that causes me gut reactions. Which a lot of them do.

Me feet and ankles were so swollen I would get 1/4 inch deep or more grooves in my skin from the elastic bands on my sock tops. I only got past it when I eliminated all the food intolerances I have from my diet. I also had low blood pressure intermixed with high blood pressure and would faint at times for no apparent reason.

Soy was the worst offender for me as far as edema, fainting, sore joints, and general misery goes. I heartily recommend getting any living beings off of soy permanently.

A good place to start with diet is to check out the top 8 food allergens, which you can find by googling top 8 food allergens. I also react to food colorings and I think preservatives although I am not 100% sure of the preservatives. I am just a sensitive guy I guess. The women's should love me for that right? :D

all three thing are prob. tied together...albumin attracts fluid into the vascular space, there by maintaining BP and if the fluid leaks out d/t low albumin, voila edema!...could she have a protein malabsorbtion issue?

      Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

      What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.

      Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.
