I'm Really Confused!

Hi everyone!! I have been feeling really lousy for about a month, where at first I would get very sick just a few minutes after eating supper foods, but mostly pasta, and have to run to the washroom. Then my stomach is so irritated after eating many foods I didn't know what to do. So I went to the doctor, and he immediently thought it was Celiac Disease. I had blood tests takes two days ago, and also stool samples. Since they had to be sent away to the nearest city, I have to wait at least a week. I feel so gross, and I haven't been able to keep anything down so I am tired and weak :( Would anyone be able to help me with whether or not they think that it is Celiac Disease, and PLEASE give me ANY tips for foods that may make me feel okay after eating (which seems very impossible as my stomach didn't even want Soup Broth), or tips of what I can do to just feel better. I appreciate all of this as I am just a teen and it's all so confusing for me!!

I can't give you an answer on whether you have celiac disease, but given your complaints, it sounds very possible. :(

As far as safe foods go, when i was really sick, the foods that worked for me were

jello

plain rice, maybe with some homemade (or any gluten free) chicken broth

tea

hot rice ceral with a little honey (like cream o' rice, just make sure the ingredients don't include wheat, oats, barley or gluten)

more tea

apple sauce

with ANY thing, if you suspect celiac, make sure it is gluten free.

good luck honey, keep posting. I know this board has been a warm hearth in a dark night for every one of us.

Libby,

Thanks so much for your reply! Since I posted my message today, I was wondering if ANYONE would respond! I went out to the movie tonight and it was the first time I've been out of the house since Tuesday afternoon, and I was feeling fine until I got to the theater and my boyfriend got me to eat a little since I've barely eaten all week.

I was so hungry at supper that I cut up fresh strawberries, kiwi, oranges and pineapple and ate that. I managed to eat a little before I was scared to continue. It's just been really tough these past weeks, and I've never wanted to have something stop so quickly. I keep thinking about if I have Celiac...it's gonna drive me crazy to give up my favorite foods!!

This next week is gonna be the hardest of my life and I don't know how I'm gonna get through it! My boyfriend has been great, but I know it's boring for him to stay inside with me day after day since I feel too yucky to go out!

I've also been extremely tired because I can't sleep either because I'm owrried or because I'm running to the bathroom 8 times a night. Also on my mind...what if it's not Celiac?? Then what? I know that something is REALLY wrong with me and I'm worried that they won't be able to find out what it is!

I've been stressed enough the past year, and this isn't helping one little bit! The week has been okay not having to worry about school (a few days off) but going back to school Monday is gonna be so hard. I'm also supposed to go to Cancun with my boyfriend for Easter, and I'm stressed about not feeling better! I just feel AGGGHH! PLEASE help!!

Daisy-

Not sure i have any wise words for you, excpet we have all been there. I know how scary it is to not know what is wrong with you, and feel so crummy. Are you able to keep foods in you at all? Even basic ones? How did eating the fruit go? I can imagine all that fuit being really acidic on a tender tummy.

I know the thought of giving up favorite foods is hard. for me, I am grateful that mine disease got SO bad all of a sudden. Like an alcoholic, I have truly hit bottom. I went from a vibrant, strong (if nearly always nauseaus) happy 23 year old, to a weak, vomiting, passing out miserable kitten. Overnight. Two trips to the emergency room and a night in the hospital later, I was truly ready to embrace WHATEVER treatment there was.

We (my family) are all pretty sure my older sister has it, but since her version is more chronic, and les acute than mine, she is less than vigorous with the diet. <_< I have no doubt, and so have no ambiguity in my diet. I am still making mistakes, but having "hit bottom" there is NO cheating for me. I know where that goes, and I HATE being helpless.

I think it is pretty natural that you feel stressed out. When you feel crappy, it is stressful, and when life is stressful, you feel crappy. Vicious cycle, eh?

Good luck in school! Having to function when feeling crummy is so hard. sometimes it makes me feel worse, but sometimes it is good, takes my mind off of things. How long until easter? damn. Again, good luck.

peace

Libby

Libby,

Thanks again for your advice. Easter break is in about a month, and I'm looking forward to it because it will be nice to get away, but also not, because I'm worried that I might not feel better.

The fruit was a little hard on my stomach, but it was better than anything else. I'll try some tea today, and see how that helps my stomach. I'm one day closer to knowing, which is great. I'll let you know how things go!

Guest Libbyk

how long do you have to wait for your test results? Is your family supportive? Nothing like being really sick for a longer than a day to let you know how people really feel.

Peace to your belly

Libby

The test results should be back late in the week. I have family problems, so I do not recieve a lot of support so that makes it even harder, but my boyfriend and his mom are really good to me!! Instead of me pushing away food, she always has fresh fruit and she's making me tea.

I'm really ancy about the results, and I hope they find out what's wrong soon, because I really want to be healed :(

Hi Libby.

I just wanted to let you know that my mom called the hospital yesterday and they still haven't recieved my results back yet. It's frustrating because it hasn't been a good week, and I can't wait to get this confusion over with.

Guest Libbyk

Lame. I think it helps to keep calling, and asking and saying hello and remindeing them you exist. they don't let time go by onp urpose, but I got the fastest action when my dad (very nicely) harrased the hospital people, to keep my name on the top of the pile. hold in there.

Hi everyone do you know whether when you get a draft cider if there is a chance that it runs through the same tubing as a beer did sometime prior?  the reason I’m asking is that I’m trying to eliminate a source of hidden gluten that I think hits me about once a month. And I have a suspicion it might be cider from the draft at certain bars. When I am out, if I decide to drink, I usually order a cider brand that I know is gluten free.    what I’ve noticed is that a couple times when I got a draft cider, I got symptoms of being  glutened that night and the day after. This doesn’t seem to happen with all times I drink cider. I had a draft at a very clean brewery and I didn’t react from that, which is what made me start to wonder. Does anyone know if this is a possible source of getting glutened? I am like 99% sure that this is the cause and I think I’ll switch to bottle/can only from here on out, but would be interested if others experienced the same thing (or work in a bar and know how this works). Thanks!

Thank you for the update @Rejoicephd it is good to know that you may have some answers.  Keep up the good work with your diet, and do let us know if you do get a firm diagnosis.  I took so long to feel better and for my TTG levels to normalise,  but got there in the end, so also bear in mind it does take longer for some of us.

Well, three months later and a startling revelation!  After going gluten free (and nearly bankrupt buying special foods), my wife made a lunch of meat potatoes and gravy made with Bertolli white sauce - no wheat there right?  Big flare up withing hours and I was really wiped out with it.  She rechecks the label on the sauce bottle and right at the bottom of the ingredients XANTHAN GUM. There's our #1 suspect again!  So by way of experimenting, she decided to try making a loaf of bread with just regular white flour like she used to do and see what happened; the familiar smell hit me when I walked in the door last night and I sat down to eat this still warm, fresh goodness - I thought even if I have to take Imodium sandwiches, it will be worth it 😋 No ill effects, either overnight or today!  Half the loaf is now gone because I had some for supper, saving just one last slice for breakfast in the morning` - I've used the bathroom once and that was normal, so maybe it is not the gluten after all? Can't wait to try a beer! 😁

Unfortunately, the development of celiac disease usually is not an end in and of itself. It usually brings along friends, given time. It is at heart an immune system dysfunction which often embraces other immune system dysfunctions as time goes on.

Thanks so much for the responses. I will urge him to go for further investigation. To be 48yrs old and develop a new allergy.. ugh, As if celiac disease isn’t enough!
