Got Glutened 4 Days Ago

I was diagnosed with celiac almost 2 years ago and have been 100% gluten free since. I do well unless I get glutened by accident. 4 days ago I got glutened at a trusted (no longer on my safe list:) and cannot seem to get better. I have had major diarrhea and extreme pain every time I eat since the episode. It is as if I cannot get the gluten out of my system. I am totally exhausted today from the diarrhea and am wondering if anyone else has had this extreme reaction. On a normal day I am extremely sensitive; one crumb containing gluten will cause problems for me. I have had other episodes where I have been glutened but never to this extreme. Any advice?

Thanks

Jen

There are some things such as Boswellia which are supposed to be helpful for D, without causing C (it apparently has other benefits too). However, I suspect it'll just take time. Perhaps the glutening you received is more severe than the usual contamination. In other words, I wonder if it was something which actually had gluten as an ingredient.

Also, a digestive enzyme supplement may help, I suppose. There are many things which are said to sooth the digestive tract, including slippery elm, silymarin, marshmallow root, peppermint, fennel, and others.

Hope you feel better soon!

Maybe it's just a stomach bug that you've picked up? Especially if it's from a "trusted" source, and your symptoms are much worse/longer than they usually are.

If it is gluten, it can take several days to recover especially if it was a big hit. You can get a lot more sensitive over time.

Hope you feel better soon! :(

Soak in a tub with Epsom Salts and Baking Powder, and lemon rind or any herb or essence that you like. Use the hottest water you can stand, and stay in there as long as you can stand it. Detox.

While you're soaking, relax and meditate. Think about the hot salt water pulling the poison out of your body and into the tub. Smell the essence of the herb or citrus that you put in your tub. Think about nothing. Soak. Relax.

Then drain the tub, shower yourself off and head to bed.

And eat chicken soup tomorrow, of course, if you can make it. Chicken soup cures almost anything. That's my free advice.

Thanks for the suggestions. Am still feeling poorly today, actually broke down and went to the ER last night, which I never do. Didn't get results at ER, their suggestion was lets load you up with fluids and send you home. Awoke at 4 AM still having the D in a major way. Just called off for work today, can't hardly go to work when you cant stay off the potty for more than a few minutes at a time :} Am going to contact my Doc when they open and see if there is anything I can do! I suspect I am just going to have to let it get out of my system. I do not believe this is a "bug" I have no other issues except for the D when I eat anything at all.

Thanks again

Glad your contacting your doctor. You might want to get stool samples taken to make sure you have not got a case of food poisoning. I had salmonella for almost 3 weeks and my doctor thought it was just my IBS (I was prediagnosis then) acting up. Boy was she apologetic when those lab reports came back.

Could it be possible that you've not been glutened and you've picked up a virus or have food poisoning? The symptoms you have are not exclusive to being glutened. I do worry a little, that celiac sufferers tend to put every bout of "D" or stomach issues down to being glutened.

D war stories...

Thar reminds me of one of the delays in my DX. I had some kind of intestinal parasite confirmed with a stool check.

I took some med for it and the D just got worse and then never went away.

OMG... what is wrong with doctors blindness to celiac disease. I told them that I always have D for years.

I had some Champagne on Sat night, I forgot it is not wine.

Yick did I explode the next day. LOL.

I had some organic Champagne on Sat night, It is always advisable, however, to consult with the manufacture to make sure that the wine does not contain glutinous additives or if it was stored in barrels that were not shared with glutinous product. This is rare, but if uncomfortable, it better to be safe than sorry.

Yicks did I explode the next day. LOL. Wonder why now?

I think I better take Beano before some foods. I did have some spicy rice with a ........aaaaaaaaaaaaa...creamy sauce, Dairy relief where were you.

After ending up in ER for accidently getting glutened.

I went on a search to find something to help speed the process. My gasto doctor told me to try probiotics. I read about pineapple and pineapple juice helping. I started taking both. This did help. I have read about a product called Gluten FREEze. I haven't tried it yet but will get some on my next Whole Foods trip.

Am awaiting stool sample results and hoping to get some answers soon. At this point I can't eat anything and have spent much of the day in the restroom! Going to bed now and am hoping to be able to get some rest tonight!

Thanks again

My son tried the Gluten Freeze and didn't get any benefit.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
