Wedding Cakes

I just got engaged last week and am starting to plan for my October 2011 wedding...however, I'm having a wedding cake dilemma. I'll be getting married in PA and haven't found many bakeries that make gluten free wedding cakes. The ones who claim that they do, have responded to my e-mails mentioning that they haven't made one yet and don't understand my question about cross-contamination ( ....not going to use them...).

I guess my question is more of a "help me figure this out". Do I have a normal wedding cake and a gluten free groom cake (so I can have some), so I have cupcakes and then just a small 8" round wedding cake for me? What did some of you do and do any of you know of any bakeries in the MD, DC, PA, NJ area that deliver and can be trusted?

I know Sweet Sin in Baltimore works with Charm City Cakes but CCC has a $1,000 minimum limit on a cake and I mean...that seems pricey.

Congrats!

There is a bakery in PA called Gluuteny Bakery, and I believe I saw wedding cakes on their site. You could check them out. I am in NC and have a friend who told me about them a couple of years ago. She tried them on a visit in the area and said they were fantastic. Worth checking into anyway.

Thank you!! I just e-mailed them. Pittsburgh is a bit far away, I'm closer to Philadelphia...so I don't know if they'll deliver and I'm not sure I trust myself with picking up a cake and driving with it!! But I'll definitely check. :)

Hey - congratulations! I live in Virginia and travel to CT frequently so, I've found a couple of bakeries that have been a HUGE help when I need some treats.

CT: Dee's One Smart Cookie in Glastonbury, CT. They definitely do wedding cakes... and if they're cakes are anything like the rest of their food, they have to be amazing. Dee also mentioned on the facebook page doing a cake for a wedding in Maine. Don't know if they delivered for that or not...

MD: Sweet Sin (but you already mentioned them :) )

VA: Triple Oak Gluten Free Bakery in Front Royal. We haven't had the opportunity to try them out, yet. But their reviews in NoVA papers are great!

Good luck!!!

Yeah, that one is always hard, especially since life seems to revolve around food. That happened to me 2 weeks ago with hibachi and with Hungarian hot dogs. I used to be more picky, but now I would love to try all the things if I could. On the bright side, my husband is absolutely wonderful with it, and his mom often brings a few certified gluten-free things to family get-togethers just for me (and tries to make sure main dishes are safe too). Having the people closest to you be supportive can make a huge difference.

I hear you. My extended family is very good about factoring in my celiac disease safety needs when making family celebration meal plans but sometimes it breaks down in the spur of the moment decisions to "Oh, let's go out and get some teriyaki" or the like. Especially when my brother in law comes into town 'cause he's pretty particular about what he likes to eat. So, sometimes I just say, "You guys go ahead without me. I'll find some leftovers." But, still, I admit to feeling a little left out at such times and a little like a 5th wheel.

Same, and I appreciate your comments. I just needed to get it off my chest. Sometimes, even when its a genuine mistake, it can feel all too hurtful and I didn't want to go back to work tomorrow still in my feelings.

Yes, probably slipped his mind. Grace is in order here is my thought.

I should have added that, while I dont have access during the meetings, I do as soon as I leave them (same for him) so I would have seen before I even left work. He has my number since we've needed to coordinate by cell a few times for work and other stuff. I usually have a protein bar or two in my desk for emergencies so I could have grabbed one of those and gone to meet them at the right restaurant.  Someone else decided on the change of restaurant and it must have slipped his mind that I wasn't coming back to my desk.
