hi there

can anyone help?

8 months ago i broke from my partner of 10 years. 3 months after i broke from him, i went to turkey and when i got back i had a week of diarrhea. before this i was healthy and fine.

A few weeks later i had pain in my lower right abdomen which then moved to my upper right under my right rib. it felt like a niggle and got worse and worse, it got to a point where it was cramping and burning. Docs did bloods on hepatitis, celiacs, stools,h pylori and then ultrasound and all came back clear.

i was put on colofac for ibs, that did not work. then i was put on 20mg of omeprazole, said it didnt work then increased it to 40mg per day. i stopped taking this last week as i felt so ill from it. parts of my body were going numb and i felt dizzy.

Yesterday i had an endoscopy and colonoscopy, so awaiting results of this.

my general symptoms are:

Pale stools

cramping feeling in stomach

nausea

ive lost 2 and a half stone in 8 months

tired all the time

weird numbness in limbs, not sure if this is related to the omeprazole though.

ive had bloods taken last week, and my doc has found highlevels of anti nuclear antibodies. so has written to the hospital about seeing a rheumatologist.

does anyone who suffers from celiacs have these symptoms?

although my test was negative for celiacs, my doc said it may mean i maybe celiac, but was a bit blasay about it.

My doctor think i maybe stressed/ depressed due to my break up earlier this year. i dont know what to think anymore.

i am eating 3 meals a day but i keep loosing the weight......

:(

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

When celiac develops in adults it is usually triggered by physical and/or emotional stress, trauma, illness, even childbirth. So yes, your doctor could be right about both the stress and the celiac. Also, it is possible to test negative in both bloodwork and biopsy for celiac disease and still be gluten intolerant. Your symptoms are certainly on the list for gluten intolerance. It will be interesting to see how the biopsies turn out. Regardless of the results, though, I would recommend that you start immediately on a trial of the gluten free diet for three months, and see how it makes you feel. Many people notice the difference right away, for others it takes a week or two. But you have had all the testing done that requires you to keep eating gluten, so there is no reason not to try the diet right away. Let us know how it works for you and what your endoscopy results are.

I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.

More great tips, and a good excuse to shop at M&S and also buy more iced buns!   I wish we had an ASDA near us, as the few times we've been to one their gluten-free pasta range seemed very reasonably priced compared to other shops.  Thanks so much, @Russ H.

I hope you are on the mend soon. About 1 in 5 people who contracted chicken pox as a child go on to develop shingles in later life - it is not uncommon. There are 5 known members of the herpes virus family including chicken pox that commonly infect humans, and they all cause lifelong infections. The exact cause of viral reactivation as in the case of shingles or cold sores is not well understood, but stress, sunburn and radiotherapy treatment are known triggers. Some of the herpes viruses are implicated in triggering autoimmune diseases: Epstein-Barr virus is suspected of triggering multiple sclerosis and lupus, and there is a case where it is suspected of triggering coeliac disease. As to whether coeliac disease can increase the likelihood of viral reactivation, there have been several cohort studies including a large one in Sweden suggesting that coeliac disease is associated with a moderate increase in the likelihood of developing shingles in people over the age of 50. US 2024 - Increased Risk of Herpes Zoster Infection in Patients with Celiac Disease 50 Years Old and Older Sweden 2018 - Increased risk of herpes zoster in patients with coeliac disease - nationwide cohort study
