Depression Or Oats?

Okay, so about 3 weeks ago me and my fiance of 7 years broke up. We are still living together (financial reasons). I have recently decided to try eating oatmeal (not the instant premix- normal oats "100% oats"). I seem to be doing fine in terms of gut but I am also feeling rather depressed and like I want to cry a lot. Is it an effect of possible CC or just me feeling crappy about being single again. I know you are not me and I'm really the only one who can answer it but maybe you guys can throw some opinions my way that can help me think it through further.

Could be any of those reasons. Also not all Celiacs can tolerate even gluten free oats. Even for those who can, they are advised to limit their intake to 1/3 cup cooked per day because more than that can casue a reaction just like when they eat gluten.

I'd stop the oats for now and see if your symptoms improve.

Depression and anxiety are what I feel when gluten CC hits. Weepy, sad to the bone, feel like I wanna cry if someone speaks to me. Then the rest of the reaction hits, but the depression, anxiety and sadness are overwhelming. Thankfully it goes when the gluten goes. I hope you drop the oatmeal for now. You have enough going on. I'm sorry about your break-up. My ex divorced me over this illness and we were together 7 years too. It definitely can be the feelings of loss of your relationship but you wanna be sure you don't add gluten to the grieving process. Hope you feel better soon.

Why don't you set the oats aside and try them again when you're not under the stress of a breakup? You are in a stressful situation now and it will be hard to sort out.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened with your fiance.

What brand of oatmeal are you using? I have to use certified gluten free oatmeal, like Red Mill. I can't eat any other oatmeal but that or I will get sick cause of the CC.

However when I'm extremely stressed out I'll get sick like I've been glutened. Last time it happened, my good friend died and I took it very hard and I was moving away by myself to a brand new city to start college, and I was sick for about a month, even though I know I wasn't eating anything with wheat/gluten. After I came to terms with it and started to move on, I started to physically feel better as well.

I often wonder if depression/stress have the same effect on my gut that wheat/gluten has.

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
