Smoky Coat

All you laundry experts-

Matt (14) went camping 2 weeks ago with Boy Scouts. It was 15 F but so windy it was -10F. He thought the weather was fine. We can start another thread about if the kid is having mental issues. My real question is: how do we get the camp fire smoke smell out of his good ( read as expensive) ski coat? I can't use detergent because it will take the waterproof off. Did wash with a Febreeze additive, dried with 3 dryer sheets. Still smells like he's making S'mores.

Any ideas? I will pass along to the other 8 boys and 4 dads that thought that was a great time?

British product, NikWax, sold in U.S. through companies like R.E.I. You can wash the coat. Rinse it thoroughly. Then follow product directions - you wash it in the washer with this stuff afterwards. Water will bead on that coat like it absolutely hates water. Promise ya. :D Phone No. 800-563-3957 if you can't find it online.

We don't have REI in the middle of the US. Will look for it. Could get my bro in Oregon or Russell to send it to me. I will look into it. Thanks.

You could try to run it though another wash using baking soda--maybe turn off the washer and let it soak for a little while before continuing.

Duh! I was thinking of putting it in a plastic tub with baking soda. Wash it with soda! Duh!

I did kinda like the idea that to save a $100 coat, would need a $350 plane ticket to the REI by Jess.

It's in the machine with a bunch of baking soda. Not sure why I am bothering. Just remembered he is camping in a few weeks.

A soak with baking soda and a wash with baking soda, 2 dryer sheets and an overnight outside....no more smoke smell!

Glad it worked! Now you know what to do after that next camping trip :)

Now all you need to do is waterproof it again with Nikwax :)

They don't sell it around here. I will have to break down and order some.

Thanks for the list too makes me realise why I still get symptoms after cutting gluten , all that reading has just made sense to why I'm still struggling , thankyou Scott Adams very insightful , I've been baking to and there is xanthum gum in the flour , I understand now why I still have issues with that too, and ive had to cut dairy also , i had a terrible flare few months ago and my throat also was very irritable and I had sinuses issues all makes sence 👍
