A Little Comic Relief

I went to Cub yesterday to grab a couple loaves of Udi's and some salsa (I decided the Super Bowl is a good time to exploit my fructose limits). Anyway, that was the first time I've had company in the gluten free aisle. Okay, so there were only two other people (and one was a delivery guy), but that frozen section is usually empty no matter how busy the rest of the store is.

So as we helped each other find the recently rearranged items (with me saying "I just want a loaf of bread! Where is it?!") a couple walks by the end of the aisle and the woman starts to turn in but has to dance around the delivery guy. Her husband runs into her and I hear him say, "Wow. People. So you Celiacs really do celebrate the Super Bowl too, huh?" We all giggle-- even the delivery guy-- and the woman says "Yeah, yeah, you just go around and get your meat. I'll meet up with you at the steaks." "Okay, don't have too much fun in this aisle."

Yes, sir. We do celebrate the Super Bowl. Chips and salsa. 1-2-3 Gluten Free brownies with So Delicious coconut ice cream. Udi's and Rudi's. Kettlecorn. Life is good.

:lol::lol::lol:

Everyone expects us to be hermits. "Whoa. You can shop at a regular grocery store??" "You can walk into Applebee's with us??" Well, yeah. once I talk the dog into bringing me the key and busting me out of my cell in the dungeon, I can do just about anything.

My dog and all the dogs we dog sit, will do anything for some gluten-free Rice Chex!

Lol! I had the same experience the other day at the Udi's area in the frozen section. Another person actually wanted some too! :P

(my dog also loves Chex and it's cute to hear her crunch them)

So does mine. Especially the honey variety. Whenever I sit down with a bowl she puts her head in my lap and waits for one to fall.

Thank you for the comic relief. I really needed it this morning. I was having a little pity party about coping with diagnosis. :-)

Every once in a while it helps to stop in at a co-op or organic food store that also caters to food sensitivities. Every one there is just as tired of having to read labels as you. When you go to a regular store where 99% of the shoppers are just tossing things into their carts without even stopping, having to stop and read and compare labels can be painful in many ways. On busy days, you may run into someone who cares about that label almost as much as you...

Or you may find someone who tries to be helpful and when you ask for directions to the small shelf of gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free ice cream (a difficult combo to find) says, "I know exactly what you're looking for. Here..." and hands you a pint labeled "low-fat". "Thank you for your help. Now let me point you to the dictionary."

At a dedicated store you're more likely to find someone with whom you will at least share similar, if not identical, definitions of what you're looking for and end up with a shopping partner for the day.

Though you may find entertainment in the gluten-free aisle I would not recommend walking through the rest of Cub on Super Bowl weekend... "I'm reading the labels as fast as I can! I'm sorry I changed my mind and went to a different shelf of salsa. Just go around me." Know what you want and what to avoid ahead of time.

that's a great story!!

and if the husband thinks we gluten- free'ers bad at Superbowl time, he should try shopping in the gluten- free section right before Thanksgiving or Christmas (the only time I've ever had to wait more than 2 mins in line at our local gluten- free store was when I went there just a couple days before one of the holidays this last holiday season)

Hi Theresa,  A few of my friends have your same story. You may be right about barley, etc.  18 years ago at a football game while clapping, suddenly my 4th finger was in agony.  It looked like a vein had burst. It was blue for a couple hours, then disappeared.  Finally realized it happened every time when drinking beer.  It's occurred several times over the years when opening a jar, lifting something that was a bit heavy, holding on to tight to something.  Immediate icing stops the pain and discoloration.  Now avoiding wheat in the US, it rarely happens.  Thanks for the reminder.  Will have Entero Labs run another test. Unfortunately they've relocated to Switzerland/Greece.

The EMA test is an old and less sensitive test for anti-tTG2 antibodies. It relies on a technician using a microscope to check for fluorescence of a labelled substrate (typically monkey oesophagus or human umbilicus), giving a simple positive/negative result. It is similar to running a standard anti-tTG2 test but with a high cut-off, making it more specific but less sensitive. Transient rises in tTG2 can be caused by e.g. viral infections and inflammation. Very high levels of anti-tTG2 (>x10 standard range) are almost certainly coeliac disease but moderately raised levels can have several causes apart from coeliac disease. Other food allergies can cause villi blunting but that is much rarer than coeliac disease or other non-coeliac causes. Not All That Flattens Villi Is Celiac Disease: A Review of Enteropathies

Maybe you have a low  intolerance to Wheat.   Rye, Barley and Malt are the gluten in Celiac disease.  It has always been stated Wheat and Gluten, not just a Wheat intolerance.  Barley will keep me in bed for (2) weeks.  Gut, Migrains, Brain fog, Diahrea.  It is miserable.  And when I was a toddler the doctor would give me a malt medicine because I always had Anemia and did not grow.  Boy was he off.  But at that time the US didn't know anyone about Celiac.  This was the 1940s and 50s.  I had my first episode at 9 months and did not get a diagnosis until I was 50.  My immune system was so shot before being diagnoised, so now I live with the consequences of it. I was so upset when Manufacturers didn't want to label their products so they added barley to the product.  It was mostly the cereal industry.  3 of my favorite cereals were excluded because of this. Malt gives me a bad Gut reaction.

Thanks much Scott.  Well said, and heeded.   I don't have Celiac, which is fortunate.
