Constipation

Some people go crazy if they don't poop every day! So, what is your definition of constipation. I have gone from 2-3 days which I think is normal to 5-6 days without pooping, and I think that is constipation.

Just wondering.

To me it isn't about how often you go, but more about how hard (in texture) and how difficult to pass. I also get cramping pain when I have constipation because of the difficulty of the whole process. Not fun. But sometimes I can get constipated even when I go everyday, and I have known people who go every few days and are NOT constipated...

I knwo when I get glutened I have paina nd diarrhea for the first few days and then I get constipated. It is very frustrating. When I was on gluten for the first 30+ years of my life I was constipated as often as I had diarrhea. I just was either one or the other and didn't really know what normal stool was until I was gluten-free. Now I mainly have problems when I get glutened.

God bless,

Mariann

Yeah that is how I think of it. When I get glutened it is hard to get out and painful but I still go every day.

I agree--when I saw the topic heading: Constipation: what's your definition, I thought, "What? How hard does it have to be to pass to be considered constipation?" Yes, I think it's on difficulty to pass or as Mariann said, texture, not so much on how often.

Right, it's when you know you need to go, but you can't. So it doesn't matter how often. Somedays I go 3 and 4 times, but I don't consider it diarherra. In fact, because I used to be constipated before going gluten-free, I consider those good days!

In an ideal world, I think we should be going after each meal...however, we don't live in a perfect world :) So, if I haven't gone for 1 or 2 days, I start hitting the fiber, beans, etc. Once you start backing up, it can get worse quickly. And think about your intestines...its not so good to have a meal setting in there from 5 days ago ! After going gluten-free, my constipation has improved a ton, and going every day is so freaking great! I would feel pretty miserable and bloated before. I saw a lecture on the digestive system once that was really interesting...talked about how long a meal can sit in the intestines, and how it should be removed in a timely manner, b/c it can releases toxins back into the body...

Oh, I am just so mad at myself. I have been eating a Wendy's grilled chicken breast every now and then, and to find out today it is full of gluten, they inject it with soy sauce. Oh, I am mad at myself. I thought I was gonna die last night. Someday when I finally stop eating gluten my body may work right after all.

Thought was finished with this but a friend just sent email saying she takes Tirosin liquid levothyroxine which has no fillers (mentioned by Pgetha above).  Friend's doc sends script to one of Tirosin's direct-mail pharmacies.  Looking that up, government insurance (Medicare/Medicaid) doesn't cover (as Pgetha wrote above).  But if use one of their direct-mail places three month supply is $57/month.  Researching that, happened to learn Yaral also makes a generic gluten-free levothyroxine.

Lysine is helpful for "cold sores" (oral herpes).

@Wheatwacked, Are you aware of the interaction of potassium iodide and losartan ?   https://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/iodine-potassium-iodide-with-losartan-1368-0-1489-0.html#:~:text=Talk to your doctor before,to safely use both medications.

As a life.long celiac, I understand this.  I simply ask that the medical profession stop disregarding the fact that it should remain a concern for some. It cost me a lot of medical discomforts.

@dmallbee, about 8% of celiacs react to the oat protein avenin like they do to the wheat protein gluten. In addition, there are some cultivars of oats that apparently do actually contain gluten.
