Scheduled For Colonoscopy

Will they be able to get a celiac diagonis from a colonoscopy or is it a waste for time and money (insurance only pays 1/2). I am scheduled for one on July 6 because I have pain in my upper left quad of my abdomen and pepcid 20mg is not helping. I have had negative blood test for celiac.

I'm not saying it's a waste of money, but they cannot diagnose celiac disease from a colonoscopy. You need an endoscopy with biopsies for celiac. Even with an endoscopy, sometimes the results are negative if the damage is patchy and the biopsies are not taken in a damaged area.

Some people here have had both negative blood tests and a negative endoscopy but still feel a whole lot better on a strict gluten-free diet. Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences with the type of pain you are describing.

Celiac Disease is detected in the small intestines and tested/biopsies through an endoscopy exam. A colonoscopy tests the large intestines for other issues.

Plus for an endoscopy you need to be eating the equivalent of 4 pieces of bread each day for 3 months. I had both scopes done at the same time but here in Canada we are covered for that, thankfully.

How old are you? A colonoscopy is not necessarily a waste of time, but it won't give you a celiac diagnosis. As Sylvia said, that test is done from the other end, they go down through your stomach to the beginning of your small intestine.

Do you have other symptoms besides upper left quadrant pain?

They will also be wanting to rule out colitis/inflammatory bowel disease, look for polyps, diverticulosis.

I am 32. I have the pain in the upper quad and diarrhea every morning. Unexplained weight loss. I notice that if I do not have a meal with gluten in it I have less pain then if I was having gluten. I have not completely omitted gluten but I have been staying away from it in a little experiement that I have been doing to see if that is what is causing the pain.

I would see if your DR would do an endoscopy at the same time! If your insurance could handle it. I had the colonoscopy done first. No answers to my pain, then 2 months later after a positive blood test I had the endo done. My DR looked at me and asked why we didn't do the endo when we did the colonoscopy? I said "talk to you physician assistant!" She kept telling me my only problem was IBS. At your age, I vote for the endoscopy too if possible with several biopies taken.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
