What Are The Symptoms

What are the actual symptoms? I don't have problems other than heartburn, GERD and brusing. Anyone with the same symptoms? The blood test was negitive, but having been on Atkins I know how I feel with and without gluten in my diet. At one time after eating foods containing gluten my stomach burned so bad it hurt to just drink water.

I asked my dr for a test for celiac disease today but obviously I need to have the blood tests done before I get the results back. One of my symptoms is terrible acid reflux and I know that certain foods seem to trigger it more than others such as weetabix, toast etc.

I tried the paleo diet briefly, the lower carb version, and found that my acid reflux vanished. I was also less hungry than when I ate a mostly carb/wheat/bread/pasta/cereals etc based diet (that would be a good thing for me as I tend to over eat and am obese at the present time). Oddly I was also much less grumpy. I noticed after putting wheat back in that I get very irritable after eating it lol.

Good luck

And remember, current estimates indicate for every 1 celiac, there are an additional 5-8 (depending on which research and/or opinion you read) non-celiac gluten intolerants! Just because bloodwork comes back negative, doesn't mean this protein isn't a problem for your system. Trust your gut! Literally and figuratively! ;)

Please work with a doctor. There are other diseases that also fall into these symptoms. The symptoms for Eosinophilic Esophagitus were the same as when my daughter was glutened and GERD. These symptoms suggest you should have an endoscope with biopsy.

Thank you so much. I have been eating gluten free and feel so much better. It seems as if gluten free products are now more readily avaiable now. I noticed that 3 of the grocery stores in my area now carry the products. Harris Teeter actually has labels on the shelf noting the gluten free product although they are so much more expensive. After I have dinner I keep waiting for that pain to occur but it dosn't. Life is good.

I have not seen the paleo diet, but I will look it up. Thank you!!!

Oh, I must try a gluten free diet myself then and see if it gets rid of my grumpiness, LOL! My son is on it at the moment. I didn't think I had a problem with it, but maybe I do as I get bad heartburn after wheatabix and heartburn in general a lot of the time - and am quite grumpy;).

I have not seen the paleo diet, but I will look it up. Thank you!!!

Basically the full blown Paleo diet consists of no grains, no dairy and no legumes. The theory behind it is that the human body has not evolved to eat these 'neolithic foods' and so has problems digesting them. However, many do a modified version (ie they may take out all grains but still consume some dairy..which I do). Legumes I have never liked much anyway (other than garden peas) so never did eat a lot of those. In short it's a whole food diet...so meat, fish, nuts (except peanuts which are a legume), vegetables, fruits and if you are doing the higher carb version things like parsnips and starchy tubers are included.

Grains were not a regular part of the human diet until agriculture came into practice some 10 thousand years ago. For around 200'000 years before that humans would have consumed mostly meats, vegetables and fruits etc, but not many grains (and certainly not on a daily basis). Starchy tubers would have also been limited (very seasonal) and so the diet tended to be relatively lower in carbs then the diets we eat today. We certainly had no processed foods or a local McDonalds. However, its not the Atkin's diet. Due to the lower carb consumption people can confuse them. The diet includes more carbs etc than Atkin's does.

For practical reasons I do the modified Paleo. I also have a free day where I consume a small amount of processed food as a treat but still avoid anything wheat based since I get horrible stomach pain and gut acid as well as diarrhoea when I consume anything with wheat in. Considering how unwell I feel when I eat them the wheat based foods are not really all that nice to me now and I don't really miss them lol.

Actually I am glad to see the back of wheat in my diet! I never was all that fond of things like pasta and bread, I mostly ate them because the diet industry said they were healthy. And because I was raised on a whole food diet and with a brother who had celiac disease, going gluten and wheat free is like a trip back in time for me. A blast from the past so to speak lol. Whilst I ate small amounts of gluten and wheat as a child most family meals were gluten free so that my brother could eat them. I only started eating more processed, wheat and gluten when I left home. So I have merely gone back to many of the foods I loved as a child. Now I just need to see if I can remember any of my mums old recipes lol.

The EMA test is an old and less sensitive test for anti-tTG2 antibodies. It relies on a technician using a microscope to check for fluorescence of a labelled substrate (typically monkey oesophagus or human umbilicus), giving a simple positive/negative result. It is similar to running a standard anti-tTG2 test but with a high cut-off, making it more specific but less sensitive. Transient rises in tTG2 can be caused by e.g. viral infections and inflammation. Very high levels of anti-tTG2 (>x10 standard range) are almost certainly coeliac disease but moderately raised levels can have several causes apart from coeliac disease. Other food allergies can cause villi blunting but that is much rarer than coeliac disease or other non-coeliac causes. Not All That Flattens Villi Is Celiac Disease: A Review of Enteropathies

Maybe you have a low  intolerance to Wheat.   Rye, Barley and Malt are the gluten in Celiac disease.  It has always been stated Wheat and Gluten, not just a Wheat intolerance.  Barley will keep me in bed for (2) weeks.  Gut, Migrains, Brain fog, Diahrea.  It is miserable.  And when I was a toddler the doctor would give me a malt medicine because I always had Anemia and did not grow.  Boy was he off.  But at that time the US didn't know anyone about Celiac.  This was the 1940s and 50s.  I had my first episode at 9 months and did not get a diagnosis until I was 50.  My immune system was so shot before being diagnoised, so now I live with the consequences of it. I was so upset when Manufacturers didn't want to label their products so they added barley to the product.  It was mostly the cereal industry.  3 of my favorite cereals were excluded because of this. Malt gives me a bad Gut reaction.

Thanks much Scott.  Well said, and heeded.   I don't have Celiac, which is fortunate.

Do you have the results of your endoscopy? Did you do a celiac disease blood panel before that?  Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

It is odd that your Tissue Transglutaminase (TTG) IgA level has bounced from the "inconclusive" range (7.9, 9.8) down to a negative level (5.3), only to climb back up near the positive threshold. This inconsistency, coupled with your ongoing symptoms of malabsorption and specific nutrient deficiencies, is a strong clinical indicator that warrants a more thorough investigation than a simple "satisfactory" sign-off. A negative blood test does not definitively rule out celiac disease, especially with such variable numbers and a classic symptomatic picture. You are absolutely right to seek a second opinion and push for a referral to a gastroenterologist. A biopsy remains the gold standard for a reason, and advocating for one is the most direct path to getting the answers you need to finally address the root cause of your suffering.
