Gluten Free Feeling Worse?

So i've been about 95% gluten free for quite awhile (no so concerned with cross contamination, etc), with periods of denial in which i would consume some gluten products here and there. but i'm over it and my doctor confirmed last week that she's fairly certain i have celiac. for the past 2 weeks i've been strictly gluten-free and for the past 3 days i've had abdominal pain that i never had before. i'm gassy and bloated. i'm being really careful and i'm pretty sure i'm not getting glutened...i'm eating fruits, vegetables, lean meats, peanut butter, almonds, eggs, goat cheese and yogurt. oh and a little bit of dark chocolate (please dont take that from me too..i'll cry). i've eliminated grains. i never had any issues with dairy so i can't imagine that i have a lactose intolerance all of a sudden.

why does my belly hurt NOW?

In the beginning as your gut heals you can have a harder time processing dairy. I had the same problem, I just laid off the dairy products for a few weeks and it went much better. Slowly introduce it back...I did hear some people say they stayed off of dairy for months, so it all depends on your body. That's the advice I got on here, so hopefully it helps you, too! Also, I have no idea what kind of peanut butter, almonds, and whatnot you're eating, but be sure they are gluten free. I have seen a few nuts have "wheat" listed on their packaging...Hope you feel better!

Besides laying off glutens in the beginning, realize my stomach was so bad that I was taking 2 prescribed acid reflux pills plus taking 2 doses of Pepto a day, I stayed away from any foods that were acidic....there is a whole acidic food list you can find on the Internet thru a search. And I laid off all dairy. I also found a "gut health" product I found on one of the sites that sells gluten free products. It took a while, inafact longer than I thought it would. I slowly stopped the Pepto and eventually cut down to 1 prescribed pill. I stayed away from dairy completely for 2 months and then when I did put it back in my diet I took an aide to help me digest it and only ate small amounts. The process took over 5 months for me. You have to let you system heal. The way my stomach felt was like the insides had been ripped away and my stomach just burned like mad. I am 48, prided myself with the cast iron stomach while the rest of my family was having issues......talk about a shock when I found out I had these issues too, it's been quite an adjustment.....I resisted for the longest time as I did not want to think this could be happening to me.

thank you. it really is nice to know i'm not alone with this. i am not used to having stomach pain (weird for someone w celiac)...i've always prided myself on a cast iron stomach, too! now all of a sudden ive got pain/bloating after totally eliminating gluten. i'll get rid of the dairy for awhile like you both did. it's never caused me any problems but maybe they've just been masked by the gluten damage. i do crave it and it's scary to get rid of it...this indicates to me that maybe it IS a problem. day 1 complete (yesterday)...now onto day 2. ::sigh::

You can do it!! its hard I have been Gluten free for 12 days and get severe headaches everyday and I do work a full time job which makes things even harder. The upside is I've noticed my other symptoms easing off Bloating, Gas urgency for the bathroom although I did have severe diarrhea yesterday. Just hang on and think to your self how much better you will feel. Once you start fealing the positives you'll never look at the enemy foods the same way.

Oh and as of right now I am lactose intolerant temporarily. Probably due to the damage I've caused myself over the years, not knowingly of course.

Hope you feel well soon

I love cheese and cream sauces, and that was the one thing that I thought would be hard for me to give up. However, as I stayed away, little by little I was feeling better, some of my symptoms were going away. My thought was just to heal, not knowing if the dairy was causing me real issues or not. After 2 months without dairy and then putting it back in my diet as an experiemnt I knew that I was having a reaction to dairy. I have several family members who cannot eat dairy, some take supplments and some avoid them all together. I chose to take supplements to help me so I could eat my cheese and have an occasional ice cream cone. I had to double up on them at first but now I am fine. It doesn't have to be forever!! :-) You can make that choice it comes to it.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
