Very Sensitive, Spacey From Allergy Meds Or Alcohol

Hi everyone,

Every allergy medicine I have ever taken has made me spacey and enhanced my otherwise light case of ADD. I get very high after drinking around 4 oz. of wine. Suffice to say, I do not drink at social gatherings anymore, or even at home, b/c I become extremely talkative and opinionated and sometimes say things I would not normally say.

Is this totally unrelated to celiac disease or has anyone else experienced this?

I have an unusually strong reaction to any drugs now. I used to be able to take anything or drink anything (like 2 or 3 strong martinis and be fine) --but not now! Of course, I was also 90 lbs. heavier  before celiac hit me hard, so maybe I was just able to handle them? Not sure.

Even novacaine at the dentist hits me hard and I suffer ill effects for days. Eye drops at the opthamologist?--my pupils stayed dilated for 3 days! (that NEVER happened before I was Dxed) Tried to take a muscle relaxer for the constant pain I have---I cut the darn thing into the smallest piece possible and it STILL kicked my butt--dopey, agitated, stomache pain--and completely "out of it". They all mess with my head too. Not sure why this has happened, so I asked my GI/ celiac-specialist doctor.

He suggested that tolerance levels can be low because of malabsorption--drugs go into the blood stream at a different rate (although it appears you are not a newbie to this, so not sure if that applies to you)

OR

there is trace gluten in the med (horrors!--he said he does not trust medications at all)

OR

your system is so CLEAN now-- that you are just susceptible to seeing the side effects more rapidly?

OR

you simply have no tolerance for them anymore. (bummer)

I researched this question myself, BTW... and could only find other celiacs with the same issues, but no clear reason why an intolerance for meds or alcohol developed.

All speculation, but perhaps one of those ideas applies? It's a real problem for me because I would really love to take some pain medication for the chronic pain I have in my joints/bones...but it just messes with my stomach and my head, so I don't bother anymore. I have tried anything and everything the doctor offers, to no avail, so I suffer with it instead...and pray for it all to get better as I heal my gut. sigh. Another lovely consequence of celiac.

If you do find out why this intolerance develops, please let me know. I am interested! :) Cheers, IH

My husband is a non drinker and quite thin. If he takes anything, he is affected quickly. To keep a tolerance up you have to drink all the time. For health reasons, sounds like you're not doing that, so you can get affected a lot easier and quicker if you are not drinking regularly. Hope that makes sense.

I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you

Of course my son is on a 100% gluten free diet.  I wish his symptoms were not debilitating as there are right now.  He cannot work, even when a miniscule of cross contamination occurs.  It's not just GI distress, but intense fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.  It's literally neurological inflammation.  Not to be taken lightly here.  We have sought out many other possible ways to cope during this window of time (8 months!!!!)  without success.   AN-PEP does not help and seems like studies on this are not well researched.  So, we are trying this out because research shows some promising results.  And, all participants showed no cravings afterwards, no signs of addiction.  The patch is different than the oral route such as smoking, vaping, gum, pouch, etc.

Have you tried AN-PEP enzymes, for example, GlutenX (who is a sponsor here)? A lot of research has shown that it can break down small amounts of gluten in the stomach, before it reaches the intestines. It might be a better approach than risking nicotine addiction, and the questionable research around this. I also hope that he’s trying to be 100% Gluten-Free.

Hi all  I was diagnosed Coeliac a few years ago and follow a gluten free diet. The list of foods that I can eat without a problem grows shorter on a weekly basis. [I also have diabetes and asthma also].  BUT the reason I am posting this is because I seem to struggle with nausea quite a lot, which is really quite debilitating, and I was wondering if others suffer from nausea, even if following a gluten free diet.
