I Always Feel Hungry

I've been gluten free for almost 3 weeks now and I always feel hungry...even after I've eaten I don't necessarily feel full...I wake up in the middle of the night with my tummy growling. I eat in the morning and about 2 hours later I feel like I didn't eat anything at all....Did/does anyone else experience this??

OH yeah, I feel that too, even after 9 years of gluten-free. Sometimes I fight it, other times I give in. I think it's that malasborption thing, not getting enough of what the body needs. I've been needing to lose weight for the past 5 years, no success so far. It's that stupid hollow feeling in the stomach that just can't be satisfied. I haven't had much luck - just try to drink more liquids, gnaw on fresh veggies helps some. Anyone else?

When I had my biopsy I was also diagnosed with Duodenal ulcers, which can cause the gnawing hungry feeling, which I was having. After the first week of Antibiotics, the gnawing hole sensation went away. Might be something to look into.

Since I came down with celiac disease I have to eat small meals every 3-4 hours. I agree with the theory about malabsorption causing the need to eat more frequently. I have noticed that as I slowly heal I am able to go longer periods of time between meals. Hopefully I can get back to a regular schedule eventually.

I suggest you eat MORE protein and fat, and less carbs. Cut back on the "gluten-free" grains. Carbs do not stop making you feel hungry, instead they tend to actully make you feel hungry. Protien and Fat tend to cut back on the "feeling hungry". Keep a reasonable balance of course, but if your hungery all the time, your prbly not getting enough protein (meat, poutlry, etc) and fat in your diet (NOT the bad fats, good fats like dairy...)

just my non-doctor opinion... but give it a try for a week or two and see. :D

I have been gluten-free since 6/13, and I feel hungry all of the time. I try and eat snacks between meals, and am going to try and eat hard-boiled eggs for breakfast, since they should make me feel full for longer.

Good luck, looks like we're in the same boat.

I sleep good all night long now. I have been gluten free about 3 weeks. When I wake up around 9-930 am I am starving! It takes several small meals up into about 100 to feel like I am not starving.For several months before going gluten free i would lay awake for hours or for the entire night. I had my left knee replacement Aug. 8th. after the surgery i started having absorption issues and losing weight. I slept terrible for over 4 months until i was diagnosed with celiac and have tried very hard to avoid gluten.it does feel good to be able to sleep again.

      Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
