gluten-free In Greece?

We'd planned a trip to Greece prior to my diagnosis...we don't want to cancel it but the thought of travel somewhat terrifies me at this point. I'm almost 8 weeks into the gluten-free diet, and I have just started to feel much much better (the last week has been amazing -- less pain, fatigue, brain fog, etc.)

We'd be staying in an apartment in Athens for a week so cooking would be totally doable. I figured I'd bring a selection of foods that I know are safe to get me through at least the first couple of days.

Has anyone played tourist in Athens? Any recommendations?

I loved Athens. Of course, it was pre-gluten-free.

Baklava is out, fried street pastries are out.

Lots of meat on a stick available. Stuffed tomatoes (rice, herbs) are fabulous. I was there on winter and fresh tangerines were on every corner - I ate them by the bagfull. Some Break Bars are supposed to be gluten-free and they will be everywhere.

Buy a comfortable backpack and take stuff with you around town. Athens is a walking city and you'll see alot of tourists with packs -you'll fit right in.

Wish i had more hints but its been too long and gluten-free wasnt an issue then.

Enjoy!

Thanks. I've poked around an apparently gluten-free items are available at health food stores and pharmacies. Turns out there's a supermarket right by the flat we'll be in. This should be do-able!

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.

Hi Colleen H,   I suffered with the pins and needles/burning feeling in my legs and feet for at least  6 years until my Nephrologist figured out that I had to go on a low salt diet.  He said my kidneys weren't strong enough to remove the salt.  The simple fix was a diuretic, but that med leaves the uric acid behind, so that wasn't an option.  On the bright side the low salt diet lowered my BP over 20 points and and the pins and needles/burning feeling went away.  Good Luck and hope this helps.

Yes this is very frustrating for me ... not sure what to think.  Feels like I'm having reactions to a lot of things  Now applesauce?? I don't understand 😞

I did ... But aren't we going to be vitamin deficienct if we are not eating due to being sick ?? If the food we eat is gluten free and we have other sensitivities , how do we get out of the cycle??  Thank you
