Can Colonoscopy Find Worms?

Didn't know which category to put this in..sorry.

I'm just wondering if a colonoscopy can detect worms/parasites? Or will the cleanse before get rid of them? Or will it cause them not to show in the colonoscopy, but still reproduce after???

Some kinds would likely be found because they attach to the intestinal wall and a cleanse might not dislodge them.

If you think you might have worms then IMHO the best thing to do is to discuss this with your doctor and have stool samples done. Ususally when looking for worms they will have you do 3 seperate samples for inspection microscopically.

I will discuss with my Dr next time I see him for sure. It's just that I'm having a colonoscopy done next Thrusday and that's when I'll see him next...I didn't suspect worms (or at least not as seriously) when the colonoscopy was planned...

Give your doctors office a call and ask to speak to a nurse. You should be able to pick up the stuff you need to do the stool samples and may even have a report back as to whether or not worms are an issue the day they do the procedure.

my doc gave me a kit to do 3 samples on 3 different days - to determine whether i need to have a colonoscopy done (i am borderline age) but it has so many *rules* - no red meat, can't do it when your menstruating, can't do it if you have hemmoroids <which i do not but when i have D for any reason, everything gets raw = blood) no ibuprofen 2 days before, etc. i seem to never have a good day to do this, so i was going to tell her to just schedule me for the procedure. so this test will tell different things than a colonoscopy will?

The test your doctor gave you is likely a test for occult or hidden blood. The tests to check for worms would not have those restrictions.

dahhh! well, now that i am thinking about it - once they scheduled it, i would have to have the same guidelines for the procedure, huh. welp, i guess i'll have to wait for the perfect 3 days. within 14 days. thanx for your help :)

I've seen intestinal worms during a barium enema. :o This was many, many, many years ago when I was a student radiographer during my clinicals. During fluoroscopy we saw it moving around in the large intestine. Something you don't see every day so we were facinated... :huh::P

As Raven said you can call ahead and have the doctor give you the lab order/materials to do a stool sample for ova and parasites.

I need to have the colonoscopy done anyway, so I called the Dr today, and they said that he would see it, so just wait the week until the colonoscopy and "while he's there" he'll keep an eye out for worms, too. Then we'll proceed from there. I guess if I do have them (please no!), what's another week?! the joys...

      Anyone understand genetic testing

      Although diagnosed with celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis, I was curious about the celiac genetics and had that testing done on my own. Unfortunately, the lab does not explain the results and any doctor I have asked said I would need to see someone specializing in genetics. I was hoping someone out there might help me understand. Here is what came back and although I understand the HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8, I wasn't sure what the variants mean and why they repeat twice. Someone said it was a double marker meaning both of my parents gave me copies. I also read having this combination makes my celiac potentially much worse. HLA DQ2 - Positive | HLA DQ8 - Negative HLA Variants Detected: HLA DQA1*05 and again HLA DQA1*05 HLA DQB1*0201 and again HLA DQB1*0201

      Understanding that normal is <15, I started off with 250+, then using the same lab it took two years to get to 11, the last test was 3. So, it jumped back up for some reason which is why I suspected gluten in my diet somewhere. I do not do dairy, eggs, oats, or soy. I am vegan and gluten free, and take numerous supplements with the help of this forum.

      Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.       It does seem like brushing would be needed, and like anything else, a little daily exposure can lead to serious issues for celiacs.
