Gastroscopy - What Can They Tell Right Away?

My son (4 yrs) is having gastroscopy on Wednesday. I was told that the analyses of the biopsies will take about two weeks. Is it so that they cannot give any indications about the results right away, or can they sometimes see signs of celiac disease immediately? I am so impatient and want some answers soon...

There are times when they can see changes that are signs when they do the scope. Some doctors recognize these changes and some don't. If your son has had positive blood work he needs the diet no matter what the results of the scope.

If he has had the blood work done then as soon as the scope is done have him gluten free, even if the blood work was negative. Sometimes we can see results gluten-free even before the test results are in but it can take some time for issues to resolve.

My GI doc told me that Celiac disease is not visible and must be seen under a microscope (damaged or destroyed villi). I just had an endoscopy and he said he found a couple of minor things but overall everything looked really good. He found an inlet patch (congenital anomaly), minimal erosive gastropathy (maybe h pylori), and z-line variable (no idea).

After the procedure he showed me pictures and gave a brief explanation of what was immediately visible. He said the biopsies take about two weeks and to follow up with my primary doc.

Thanks for the replies! Nice to know what to expect. We plan to put him on gluten free right a way - I really look forward to having the biopsy taken and thereby be able to start the diet.

Thanks @Beverage for checking in!  I haven't changed the dogs' food yet.  I'm still working through some of the other issues that I need to remedy (transitioning to an anti-inflammatory diet, being sure to get only gluten-free certified items, and buying some new cookware for my kitchen).  Somewhere after that, I have on my list to try out the dogs on a new dog food, but I haven't gotten there yet.  In the meantime, though, I can definitely see that some of my worst days seem to follow when there's a possibility of gluten cross-contamination (I'm still working to cut waaay down on these instances) OR when I eat anything with dairy/ milk protein in it.  So I think I need to really get a better handle on my day-to-day eating habits to reduce all gluten cross-contamination into my food and also any dairy intake, and then at that point, I think I'll start moving over to the dog food thing.

Sounds like fun, and I was in Germany a few years ago so you might find these articles helpful:

I don't think you have the URL/site address correct, as there is nothing at that site.

Hello All I am traveling to Germany in October and will be in Berlin, Rothenburg ODT , Salzburg, Fussen and Munich.  I am also driving the northern part of the romantic road with stops in some of the smaller towns along the way.  I would really appreciate any recommendations for gluten-free friendly places, restaurants and any gluten-free beer gardens.  Thanks in advance, Laura
