hey all moms and dads of children with celiac disease and this symptom: short stature.

i have a question for you: since we start the gluten free diet, how long does it take to start to grow at a normal velocity?

my son is 6yo, he is on the 2.5 percentil of the curve (normal range for him is 50%).

i ask this because this will be the most important parameter for us (me as mom and his doctor), and id like to know your experience.

thanks,

mara

Hi, My son was diagnosed when he was 14 months old and he was the only one who it effected their growth (3 of my children have coeliac) It took about 6 months for him to start improving and catching up on his height. He is 14 years old now and his height is fine (although he believes he is short lol)Once everything has healed you should see improvment rather quickly

With my son I'd say 3 - 6 months.

Mara,

I have a son that was diagnosed at the age of 13. He is now 14.5 yrs old and his growth has dropped from 75% to 15%. The Gastro that we see told me that when his small intestine is heeled is when he should start growing. I have read many articles on short stature and celiac disease and they all say that. and they also say that they usually will have catch up growth. they really don't even know exactly what causes the growth delay. My advice is to have him tracked by and endocronologist, keep checking his numbers to make sure his gluten numbers come down and periodically do an endoscopy to make sure that he doesn't have any damage in his small intestine. good luck to you.

Mara,

This thread is over 4 years old so I doubt you'll be hearing much back but welcome to the boards.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
