Weight Gain

Scotslass Newbie

I've gone through my life being a skinny minnie and all my friends were jealous beacuse I could eat and never put on weight

Then I was diagnosed with coeliacs and went from a size 8 - 10 to a 12 - 14 :( and it wont budge..I physically can not do any more excercise and I am very careful about what I eat.

Coincedentally I did stop smoking a few years after diagnosis so thsi probably didn't help with the weight gain

Any tips?

I have been skinny all my life too. I wish I had your problem. Anyway you should replace butter with coconut oil. It does so much for you including helping lose weight. Look it up.

Love your new size? Marilyn Monroe was a size 12. :) A size 12-14 is not an unhealthy weight unless you are pretty short.

I'm losing a little weight since I've discovered I feel better avoiding grains, starchy foods, and sugar. I wasn't specifically trying to lose weight, but it seems to be happening on its own. The gluten-free breads and pastas are very starchy and it's easy to gain weight on them.

I agree with Skylark.

I went Paleo/Grain Free and have been losing weight.

I was a Fat Celiac.

Topped out at 200.

I'm 5 feet tall.

Being gluten free and now grain free I'm down to 115.

Carbs and starches stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin.

Insulin's job is to store fat.

Whenever you eat carbs and starches and sugar, your body thinks you cannot find food (Protein)

So it stores everything as fat...thinking you are trying to survive a famine.

This was just an analogy as a way of understanding.

If you eat only meat, nuts, veg and a little fruit, your metabolism stabilizes and your body will be the size it was meant to be.

Quitting smoking reduces your heart rate which in turn slows your metabolism. Along with a change in diet you might need to increase your cardio. I know you said no more exercise and Im not sure what kind of activity you do but if it helps, I walk an hour a day - really brisk pace for four minutes, slow for one minute and then increase it again to four minutes and so on. Also I try not to eat after 6 p.m.

Have you had your thyroid tested? What do your vit levels look like? The body could still be in need of something you are not getting in your diet and that will set off cravings and keep the body hungry. I would be sure of where all your vit levels stand at this point and then look at other options. Keep the protein to 4-6 ounce per serving and trim all fats. The body really does not need large amounts of protein per serving. One great thing about proteins though is not only are they beneficial for repairing but they can be used as an energy source rather than depending on carbs for energy. Normally we consume a great deal of carbs in a day but in the process of their break-down they turn into sugars that can be very eaily stored by the body (supposedly for needed use later) so watching the carbs and making sure you get the proper amount of protein can make a difference. The other thing is to just look at your diet. The American diet is horrible. We eat too much fat, sugar and just general junk. Nix the soda and chips, there is nothing that benefits the body in these and they are loaded with calories. There's a few thoughts for you to ponder.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding

I think I found a huge culprit for severe reactions to create worsening of my c symptoms. Do people with celiac have sensitivity and /or have opposite reaction to certain medications Where can I find a list ?  I'm new here I'm.wondering why I am getting worse when I take certain medicine...the burning feet.  Rebound muscle pain so intense  How many people get opposite effects or have a horrible attack after these meds

Does anyone know if that includes scrambled eggs and healthy smart butter (,gluten free) I add a very tiny amount of margarine less than a teaspoon.  I did no't have any bread    It just seems like no matter what I eat my stomach and nerves over fire and here comes a host of horrible symptoms. My lower abdomen feels horrible, my right leg thigh muscle.. very odd. Jaw pain. Burning feet , joint pain , you name it  The anxiety just creeps up into brain fog. I don't think I could explain this to anyone who is unfamiliar.  Also,  I most likely will not remember posting this until I check it.  This is highly unusual for me because I have an excellent memory.  One weekend before I knew anything about celiac I lost an entire weekend from severe brain fog, confusion, pain, etc.  I honestly thought I was losing my mind. When I think back I recall eating a lot of PBJ sandwiches and turkey sandwiches.  Once again did not know about gluten.  I was just too sick to cook. Do people fast during attacks ?? It seems horrible to keep going through this. I hope I'm not causing my own problems... I wonder if I should fast because I'm not eating gluten .  Chicken ,  scrambled eggs no milk , canned carrots,  gluten free low sugar low fat Greek yogurt which I already posted about 😞 Any suggestions I am open... I am bedridden when this happens to me.  Thank you Celiac community. 🙏🏻❤️
