Prednisone Contains Gluten

Hello! This is my first time to post but I have read many posts from other members and they have proved to be helpful. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2009 and have been following a gluten free diet since my initial diagnosis. Right before Christmas, I had an awful week of diarrhea without other symptoms. Now I never had diarrhea before the diagnosis since my predominant problem was constipation. Since the "spell" before Christmas, I have not felt well and my stomach continues to hurt off and on. I had another colonoscopy which was fine and my GI doctor ran some blood tests. My celiac blood panel came back abnormal. He then ordered a prometheus blood test which also confirmed that the celiac was still active. I have been zealous about my gluten free diet and also other issues like lotions and creams and shampoo. Initially I called the drugstore and asked that they flag all my medicines to be checked for gluten. Once learning that my celiac blood panel was still showing activity, I called the drugstore again and had them check all my medicines. I just found out that the prednisone that I had been taking could possibly contain gluten since the company did not test them for gluten. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. The drugstore was able to run my prescription again (just had one filled) and get me gluten free prednisone. I have to take prednisone for dermatomyositis which was diagnosed in the late 90s.

To assume this would contain gluten just because it isn't tested for it would be a mistake, as most medications are not tested for gluten.

Take care,

Scott

I second what Scott said.

I also question the reliability of a GI doc who thinks a colonoscopy will let him see your celiac damage. I would get a copy of those blood tests. If he doesn't do a endoscopy to check for Celiac damage, he may not be running or reading the blood test correctly.

Thanks so much for the replies. I did have an upper endoscopy intially to determine if I had celiac disease. But you may be right that I need a repeat test since I have had the latest problem. I feel like I am starting over in trying to determine why my celiac is still active. I felt so much better for a long time but did continue to have a lot of gas over the last few years. It was better but not gone.

This is really helpful  I had not considered sugar alcohols or inulin as triggers. Thanks for the practical baking tips too color coding and baking G F first makes a lot of sense. Thiamax (TTFD) plus a B-complex, and if you want benfotiamine, the Life Extension formula covers that at ~100 mg.

High fiber can definitely cause sudden GI distress especially if it’s a new addition but accidental gluten exposure can feel similar. Keeping a simple food/symptom log and introducing new gluten-free foods one at a time can really help you spot the pattern. Thanks for asking  I’m mainly looking for gluten-free staples and snacks. Any recommendations for brands or go-to items would be appreciated.

sorry a bit confused so I should take my B complex along with Objective Nutrients Thiamax for TTFD but what about a Benfotiamine to take. The Life extensions contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine together or im confusing myself. I am trying to see if I take Thiamax what should I take for Benfotiamine. Thanks EDITING after further research I see ones water soluble ones fat soluble. So I guess 100MG as you suggested of Life Extension contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride. and the Objective Nutrients Thiamax contains TTFD.     would work for me.

I put on over 12kg by eating protein with every meal, 3 to 5 times a day. Eggs, Chicken, Tuna, Turkey etc. I stay away from too much red meat as it can be inflammatory. Scott is correct. I've come across a bunch of Coeliac PT's on Tiktok and Instagram. They all say the same thing, the key is getting enough protein and consistency.
