Sharing A Kitchen Is Tough

I was doing so well up until last night. I may not have been as vigilant in wiping up prior to cooking my dinner last night. Within an hour of eating, I had indigestion. My sister had cooked pancakes for breakfast and I am wondering if that may have done it. I had tilapia and butternut squass Which I had been eating with no problems.

When I wipe down before I cook, I use Clorox wipes. My sister uses a dish towel.

Could this have been the problem?

Gluten is not alive so using a Clorox wipe versus a towel wouldn't change the cleaning in the sense of killing bacteria/viruses. However, if the towel may not have picked up all the gluten depending on how well your sister cleaned. It may be that because you are the one with the Celiac, you are more careful about cleaning than she is to make sure you get all the gluten off. My suggestion would be for you to clean the counter tops off each time before you cook to make sure there isn't any gluten hanging around.

Yes, soap and hot water.

And as environmentally unfriendly as it is, in a shared kitchen disposable paper towels are quite handy.

Stick scrubbies in the dishwasher daily. Change out dish rags daily.

Threaten her life re: cc and crumbs.

Hi there. I also share a kitchen with my husband who is not a gluten free eater and was always the cook in the house. He is a homemade biscuits and gravy kind of guy. Since he always cooked, I always cleaned up. Now, since I am gluten free, I still do all the clean up for both of us. The fact is, I know he doesn't clean like I think it should be done. I use a roll of paper towels quite quickly, I don't use cloth anything in the kitchen for fear of just spreading it around. I do have cloth hot pads but we use separate ones in separate drawers. Use separate containers like butter dishes and even sugar canisters as flour and sugar are many times used together in preparation of baked goods. Keep condiment jars, spice jars and the like wiped down and I also use storage bags in the pantry for various flours, baking mixes etc to keep them from getting all over the other pantry items. Don't expect others to have the same standards as you. It's your health at stake, not theirs. Hope the helps some. Good luck. Be well.

      hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

      One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

      @GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.
