How Much Is Enough Gluten For Testing?

Would say a bowl of Cherrios every morning for say 3 months be enough? How much is enough to insure an accurate bloodtest?

How big a bowl? How big a person?

For an adult, not at all. For a small child, an adult size bowl would be certainly enough, but a small child's bowl, maybe not (I'm not sure how big they really are). For an adult, the average recommendation is 2-3 slices of wheat bread a day for three months.

The other problem is using Cherrios. They are primarily oats, and the exposure requirements to show a positive may be different for oats, even if they are contaminated.

2-3 slices a day for 3 months is recommended as Tiffany said.

I would say do something other than Cheerios though because that is mainly oats and even though they are contaminated they may not have as much gluten in it as you would need.

BAH!!!!!!!!!

THAT is what I was affaird you were gonna say. I am 5"11 and 170pounds, talking about 60grams ie 2 "severings".

*gets list out, and puts celiac disease back on it*

Thats about the only gluten I had regualrly up to the testing.

I ask cause well I had removed celiac disease from the list and was ready to move on down the list... but thought about the fact that I had pretty much dropped the grains group from my diet save for 1 bowl of Berrie Burst Cherrios in AM. Prbly enough ot make me feel like crap, but not enough to show in test. BAH!!!

How would you convert 2-3 slices of bread to something like ceral? I dont like the idea of bread in my house, to crumbly. I like the idea of cearl since 5 days a week I eat breakfast at work, no chance of tolddler getting any. If he was older and knew to aviod it I be less concerned... but he not and he TEETHING (last 4 molars) so EVERYTHING gets in his mouth. No gluten in our house! To risky right now.

How about a bowl of shredded wheat in the morning (or Raisin Bran :-) ), and a bagel during the day? Bagels aren't as crumbly or messy as bread, but good ones are made with plenty of gluten.

Gotta be RASIN brand. Maybe a cinamon RASIN bagel... hmm I hate this, but since I have only negative blood work right now, not realy getting better, I gotta do it I guess. :( I need to be able to cross this off the list some how or prove it. If I cna prove it maybe I can be done being sick and getting tested constantly for new things...

Why can't you just add raisins to the shredded wheat then?

I could and mabye for varity I will, but why shreaded wheat over rasinbran? The bran flaks are wheat, right?

I used Kellog's varieties for this comparison, but I believe it hold true in general:

Raisin Bran has only half the protein that Shredded Wheat does. It's that protein that you want to load up on, so you want to maximize that. Heck, cream of wheat with wheat bran added would be even better, but not necessarily as tasty. :-)

It is! Gluten is the term for plant proteins. Gliandin is the particular gluten (or protein) that is in wheat that bothers celiacs.

:huh: Umm okay.. well after I eat this box of Krogers Raisn Bran... I'll get some kroger miniwheats.. and add rasins!!! :D:lol:

Hears what got me thinking about all this celiac disease junk agian... on Tuesday I had a 9" pizza (yes a "real" one, and yes was very good...with peperoni!) and on wendsay I had some cookies (remeber, 2 neg biopsies, and 1 neg blood test.... had ruled out celiac disease) and many of my phatom un solvable symptoms have goten worse (nausa, gas, etc). Still are today. Soooo start thinking about it again and realize that maybe have not realy given the blood test a fair run. So.. bought some Rasinbran and 6 cininamon rasin begals today... If it is celiac disease then next couple months gonna suck, but at least I will know.. if not... well at least its rule out for good.

If you really like raisin bran, go with it. I didn't mean to sound like it wasn't an option, I just put the shredded wheat down because of the protein content. Have a bit bigger of a bowl of raisin bran for breakfast or ah extra bowl for dessert. If it's going to cause symptoms, at least you can enjoy what you're eating in taste. :-)

Well did you feel better gluten free? Even if it's not celiac you could have a problem with gluten so you could still benefit from the diet. If gluten is causing more trouble it would lead me to think it is at least part of your problem.

well I dunno that I felt much better when I was gluten-free.. but now that I have much increased the gluten (BY ALOT compared to before) I defintly feel much worse. I just dunno if its the placibo effect or for real.

Pre all this, 2 or 3 years ago I started the Atkins diet which is very low gluten, and I rember feeling better... but I DID lose 50 pounds.. so that is what I always atributed it to. Never considered gluten till aroudn the time I joined this board only a few months ago... So dunno if theres a coraltion or not yet.

Matilda,

Are you saying you were on a low gluten diet when you were tested before? If not it doesn't seem very likely to me that the tests will turn positive...unless you keep at it for maybe 10 years or so (average time to diagnosis in US).

If you get time, go back and read this thread from the start and you will see discussion about levels of gluten needed to turn a postive result. The summary is I was probably eating enough gluten to make me sick (assuming celiac disease) but definitly NOT enough to trip a postivie result.

The genetic test at Enterolab costs about $150. Maybe this would clarify things for you if you could do it.

It is almost a given that I have the gene, there are ppl in my family with symptons, but no one in my wife's. With think it played a big part in my grandfather's death. I can not afford $150.. that is WAY to much for me. The only way I am gonna get a test is if I go via my insurance apprived doctor and pay a $20 copay for the standard blood test.

I know you've tried being gluten-free but you should consider whether you've really given it a proper trial, given that for most adults it takes some time to improve.

I have been sick most of my adult life, I am not willing to wait a few years to see if I will get better when I can pontentialy knock this off the list by Thanksgiving. :(

Thank you for your thoughts and wishes!

NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.
    • Scott Adams
I will assume you did the gluten challenge properly and were eating a lot of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before your test, but if not, that could be the issue. You can still have celiac disease with negative blood test results, although it's not as common:  Clinical and genetic profile of patients with seronegative coeliac disease: the natural history and response to gluten-free diet: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5606118/  Seronegative Celiac Disease - A Challenging Case: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9441776/  Enteropathies with villous atrophy but negative coeliac serology in adults: current issues: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34764141/  Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.

I'm very confused... My blood test came out negative, I checked all antibodies. I suppose my Total IgA levels are normal (132 mg/dl), so the test should be reliable. Still, I'm not relieved as I can't tolerate even a single biscuit. I need to talk to my doctor about whether a duodenal biopsy is necessary. But it is really possible to have intestinal damage despite having a seronegative results? I have really strong symptoms, and I don't want to keep skipping university lectures or being bedridden at home.
    • Scott Adams
They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.
    • Scott Adams
In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?
