Glutened By Dirty Wine Glass

So I'm out with friends at a soccer game having a really good time. They go to the snack stand and get their food, and I pull my baked potato out of my pocket and eat that. Worked out great and I am getting used to this kind of routine. Then, they suggest that we go by a nearby wine and pastry joint after the game. Why not? We get there and order and I am 2/3 of the way through a nice glass of white wine when I notice a bunch of those dishwasher crumbs stuck to the bottom of the inside of the glass. This place serves pastries and sandwiches, so I knew I was kidding myself if I thought that might be rice stuck to the glass. This all happened last night and today I have some gut pain but no d yet. Hopefully this will be one of those light cc reactions. Doesn't it just stink when you know you've been nailed and all you can do is wait and see what happens? What do you do when you go out and get something to drink? I have long given up on getting food out, but drinks can be a slippery slope too. You have waiters and bartenders with food and beer gluten all over thier hands making and serving your drinks. The dishwasher water is a pool of gluten. What do you do, bring your own glass?

That is just gross.. most upscale places would check the stemware!...When we are someplace where they bring coffee in the cups & don't fill at the table, I always ask please check the mug......I also hate when at cheaper places they serve food on Melanie dinnerware & it's all scratched up.. Gotta be hidden gluten crumbs in those scratches...

We are never100% safe anywhere.

Maybe you need to carry one of those liquor flasks. I've thought of that myself.

I don't think this is a big worry at all, as far as frequency of the worry about it happening. I have drunk many, many glasses of wine over 7 years at restaurants and have never gotten sick from a wine glass and yes, I am very, very sensitive for those of you who would ask such a question. Pastry places are always a gamble but I have never found anything other than wine in my glass so this place must not be very clean. It is gross to think they didn't check the stemware before pouring wine into it but I don't think this is something that happens often. To think we are "not 100% safe anywhere" applies to anyone who leaves their house everyday. Life is a risk!

@pilber309, as knittykitty pointed out, lactose intolerance is not the only issue with dairy in celiac community. Lactose intolerance has to do with the sugar component of dairy, lactose. However, some celiacs react to a protein fraction in dairy, namely, casein, like they do gluten.

It could well be a new intolerance developing.  Does your diet incorporate pure oats i.e. those safe for coeliac consumption?  I find I can only tolerate a certain amount, same goes for dairy in fact, then I start to get gastric symptoms.   Or have you started consuming a new type of gluten-free bread, or more gluten-free bread than normal, that might contain oats?  I remember reading a post on this forum from a woman who had started to eat a lot of loaves made with oat flour and her coeliac symptoms kicked off again.  I am sure you know this, but some coeliacs cannot tolerate pure oats.

I eat a lot of dairy but its intermittent is this burning so I would assume it would happen all the time. Plus I have been tested for lactose intolerance  etc and I am fine and the other symptoms of that I don't get. As a aside  my dad died last month after a long illness so I wonder if the stress of that might be a influence as a bodily reaction to stress.
