Interesting Tidbit On Finger/toenails

Hey everybody, I was came across some very interesting information last night as I was googling about nails. I didn't realize that they can tell a lot about your health. I actually came across it by accident. I have a weird toenail on my baby toes. My dad had it, I have it, and my son has it. Turns out it is called congenital onychogryphosis. It only affects our little toenail. I have always just called it our bird toes. ;).

Anyways, my son's other toenails have always grown funny. If they grow long enough, they curl around the top of his toes. I just thought that is how they grow. I have never brought it up to a doctor. It turns out that it is called toenail clubbing. His toes have not gotten bigger at the nail like some of the pictures, but it was interesting to note that the cause of clubbing is because of the reduction of oxygen in the blood (such as in heart disease or lung disease). Other possible causes listed include IBS and Celiac disease, (among others). I was just amazed.

It just gives me more reason to know that something was wrong with my son internally. My doctor never seemed concerned with all of his constipation, etc. until my son started vomiting every morning for a month with no fever or anything else (besides constipation and occasional diarrhea). And even then, originally our Dr. tried to say THAT was a virus, except it didn't go away after his 2 week diagnosis. Go figure.

So, check your kids' nails! Does anyone else have kids whose nails club?

Does this also mean the same thing on finger nails or just toes?

My finger nails used to do this before going gluten free. I used to think it was because of lack of vitamins. Now that I'm gluten-free my nails do not do this any more and are much stronger.

It was both for fingers and toes. For my son, it is just his toes though. It was really interesting, it says it can come on rapidly and that it can go away just as rapidly (especially with the change in diet) ;)

Very interesting...always learning new things about myself pre-gluten that were signs I didn't even know about!

I have that! And so do both of my kids. All of us have celiac disease. Weird!

P.S. I always called them my "witchy" nails because they curl around in such an odd, scary way.

Honestly, I can't remember exactly which link I was on when I first read it, but if you google nail clubbing, lots of sites will come up.

Here is one:

This one here doesn't directly state Celiac as being one of the causes of clubbing, but I like how it lists the different stages of clubbing:

Oh, here is the site where I first found it:

Here's another one:

This one mentions how clubbing can go away when the causes for the clubbing are treated:

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
