Powerade

I've done a lot of searching, both on the web and through this forum regarding Powerade.

My challenge is that somehow I was glutened. I returned to the gym this week finally, and after my workouts I drank powerade.

On Wednesday I started to bloat and constipate. Today was really painful, I could barely make it through my work day.

Naturally, I'm going through every single thing I had taken in on Monday-Wednesday. The only thing that didn't specifically say gluten-free was the Powerade. In searches that go back 5 or 6 years, others also have wondered if the Ade got them.

So just bringing up the product once more to see if anybody has similar suspicions.

Ron

Did you have the no calorie version? Artificial sweeteners can bloat you. Some of them bother me. Otherwise, Powerade should be gluten-free. I don't care for it so I haven't read the ingredients lately. Very few commercial mass produced drinks have gluten in them.

DId you check with the company that makes them? Says they are all gluten-free.

I've heard that only two of the powerade flavors are gluten free. You may want to switch drinks or check which flavors are the gluten-free ones. Good luck! :)

I let my son drink it.

He hasn't had a reaction. He only drinks the red and the blue one.

He has drank it after wrestling practice every day for 7 months.

It's summer now so he's drinking Kool-aid.

He gets really sick and feels like glass is in his stomach if he gets gluten.

He's not had a reaction from Powerade.

Hope you figure out what got you.

It's tough to know sometimes.

I had gotten a case at Sam's before I was diagnosed. It's the grape, blue, and red ION4 case. I found something on another site that was dated 2012 that showed ION4 all flavors were safe. But yes - in my searches I did find previous postings that only those 2 flavors were gluten-free.

I am one of the people allergic to artificial sweeteners - so no, they are not the zero or reduced calorie versions.

It's just the only thing I can think of. Otherwise I've eaten only fresh meats, fruits, or Amy's Organic gluten-free bowls or Evol's gluten-free bowls.

Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Check with the company, not someone's mother's cousins plumber says only the green ones are gluten-free. :D

I posted the link before, but this is what they say. Also, if you read the ingredients, they don't have any gluten listed in the 3 I read. Powerade is a Coca cola product.

"None of the Coca‑Cola or Schweppes brands contain gluten, milk, egg or soya. People with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease should talk to their healthcare provider about including soft drinks as part of their diet."

Also, if you read the ingredients, some of them! Including Ion, do have artificial sweeteners like sucralose.

Some have had issues with CC with Amy's products. Perhaps that is what got you.

Ron. I think the very same thing happened to me. It was the red powerade in the bigger size. It wasn't as intense as a food glutening but still knew something bad happened. This was around a month ago I think. I can drink the grape one with no problem. It's a mystery.

I did have the red one on the day in question. It was about 36 hours of heavy discomfort, joint pain, mental fog, and reduced vision, but today I'm coming back.

Lesson learned: Ron and Colleen have to stay away from red Poweraid!!!

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—
