I'm still not sure if i have this but...i read on a website that even smelling it can trigger a reaction is this true? I mean...if i can't have high sals foods and my husband can..does he have to give them up because...i can smell them when he's making stuff in the kitchen...

I had salicylate sensitivity for a while, but it seems to be getting better. It turns out I had gastritis, and the sals made my stomach sting.

I don't know if you can get symptoms from smelling sals, but I know I get a reaction from smelling gluten foods when my family cooks them.

I'm always paranoid while walking through the grocery store bread section...it's just unavoidable. I don't get sick but i'm always scared I will and hold my breath :( So is salicylic sensitivity something that is temporary sometimes then? I'd been sniffing young living essential oils-peppermint and ginger (both high in sals) the couple days before i got sick. The sick feeling was way worse than my usual slight tummy aches. And turnip greens seem to have given me tummy ache before too. Completely freaked out :(

I seem to be overcoming my sals sensitivity too. I haven't tried blueberries yet, but I have been eating spices, and spices are high in sals. The thing is, sals never bothered my gut. They made my psoriasis flare badly. I've been eating spicy bison hot dogs, and I also made pork pie with allspice, and clove. I ate it twice a day for several days (because it's my favorite). No psoriasis whatsoever.

I seem to be good with white potatoes again too, so if nightshades were a problem, it seems they no longer are. I'll be testing that next week when I go get some gluten-free pizza. The place I plan on going is owned by a family with celiac members so they are really good about CC. Several celiacs I know eat there without problems, so wish me luck!

Did you ever need an epipen bartfull? I'm on the sals website now reading their forums and utterly terrified. Some people can't even smell mowed grass and that's a huge childhood memory of mine that i savor during summer weather and i sniff it in and it's comforting. I'm really scared I'll need an epipen and that all this is permanent etc. I'm scared i will have to give up that childhood memory along with all the gluteny ones :(

No, my only sals reaction was psoriasis. What is your reaction? If it isn't hives and breathing then what you have is an intolerance, not an allergy. If you get sick to your stomach, you won't need an epipen. :)

I've only ever had stomach problems/digestive issues. I did have itching back in 2009 right after a visit to disney...i had a bad flu and my in laws gave me motrin. But that continued on and off for a couple years after and later i found out hypothyroid and celiac can cause this itching sensation under my skin. When my husband first moved in when we were dating i would get cold uticaria or whatever the name of it is lol....We'd be out walking in the snow in the cold and sometimes but not always i would get this large raised disc shaped things on my cheek. The itching i use to get from time to time use to be that i would either scratch my arm or my husband would scratch my back and a line of bumps would pop up where i was scratched. That doesn't happen the past year or so even before i cut high sals. What do you think? Is that hives?

Would like to add i had no itching this time and i had no itching in august with whatever happened. I also use garnier shampoo and i don't itch from that and it has sals.

I chew peppermint trident gum all the time too and usually my tummy isn't bothering me when i do. So i dunno what to think. Because i'm theorizing that these essential oils i sniffed might have done this...because of their sals content....i just dont know..

NOTE: I did the ice cube test on my forearm just now to see if i get cold urticaria still...i only ever got it on my cheek anyhow but for both me and my husband there was just a red ring surrounding where the ice cube was (which i would think anyone would get really) and no raised areas. Weird. Maybe going gluten free got rid of any urticaria..cold or otherwise that i use to have? I will say I put the ice cube on my cheek for a few seconds..couldn't handle more than that because ice stings....welll..i didn't notice anything at first and now since WARMING UP i feel a small little raised area..not sure if that was actually there before or not. Dunno what to think. What does it mean when you have cold affecting your face but not the rest of you??

      You’re not crazy—some people have severe neurological and physical reactions to gluten, not just digestive issues. While testing can be tricky without eating gluten, documenting symptoms and seeing a specialist familiar with atypical celiac or gluten-related disorders can help. Your reactions are real, and it’s valid to be cautious.

      You might consider asking for a referral to a RD (Registered Dietician) to help with food choices and planning a diet. Even apart from any gluten issues, you will likely find there are some foods you need to avoid because of the shorter bowel but you may also find that your system may make adjustments over time and that symptoms may improve.

      Losing 12" of your small bowel is going to present challenges for you in nutritional uptake because you are losing a significant amount of nutritional absorption surface area. You will need to focus on consuming foods that are nutritionally dense and also probably look at some good supplements. If indeed you are having issues with gluten you will need to educate yourself as to how gluten is hidden in the food supply. There's more to it than just avoiding the major sources of gluten like bread and pasta. It is hidden in so many things you would never expect to find it in like canned tomato soup and soy sauce just to name a few. It can be in pills and medications.  Also, your "yellow diarrhea, constipation and bloating" though these are classic signs of a gluten disorder, could also be related to the post surgical shorter length of your small bowel causing incomplete processing/digestion of food.
