Newly Gluten Free...

Hi everyone! I recently found a website that suggested gluten could be the cause of my problems. My symptoms are many and i have had lots of blood tests which all came back fine.

I have felt exhausted for years, dragging myself from day to day. I have suffered with severe depression, sleep disorders, night sweats, cystitis without infection, painful muscles, headaches, all the gastric problems and lactose intolerence. it had got to the point where i was embarrassed to admit how bad i felt and my kids were complaining that i was always in bed. so i decided to try being gluten free. it has made the most massive difference that i feel like i need to pinch myself to check i am not dreaming. most of my sypmtoms are gone, i still feel tired but nothing compared to the dibilitating exhaustion that i had before. i started to feel better within a few days. a week in i accidentally ate some and was back in bed for 2 days. i have booked a blood test but i will be 3 weeks gluten free be the time it is done. will this effect the result? i desperately do not want to back to eating gluten.

sorry this was so long, if you are still reading, thankyou very much. x

Hello, and welcome Kyla.

Yes, I am sorry to say that after three weeks gluten free there is no way to guarantee that the testing will be an accurate result. Antibodies retreat from the bloodstream if there is no gluten there to fight. :) Do you have a PCP who could fax in a blood test lab slip for you so you don't have to wait for an appointment? You could always call and ask. And go back to your bed and eat gluten until then

I am in the same boat as you. I have had all kinds of symptoms that made getting through the day difficult. All my blood work has come back perfect, yet going gluten free has made all the difference. I feel like a new person! I tried the diet on my own without having any biopsies, but am scared to go back to gluten. I recently had a small amount of gluten accidentally, and paid severely for it.

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
