Hi! wow, this is an old thread, but, hello to all Mainers out there! I am still in Southern Maine and still do not go out to eat practically ever. But I love to hear of any Portland and south restaurants that truly get "gluten-free" for the very sensitive. I'd love to try going out again someday... If any Mainers read this, would love to hear from you...

ARCHIVED Anyone From New Hampshire?
oceangirl replied to Christina725's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Christina, I live in Southern Maine but was born in Vermont and spent first 10 years in Walpole,NH. I use Lancome's "Le Rouge Absolu" line of lipsticks- they are gluten-free. A bit pricey, but worth it. Not sure of other lines but I do think Ecco Bella make-up (available at health foodish places or Whole Foods) is gluten-free as well. good luck and... -
ARCHIVED Any Good Books Lately?
oceangirl replied to debmidge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm late to this game but I thought I'd add a few here. I loved Ayn Rand in my twenties- Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, two favorites. Most impacting book of all time- Crime and Punishment, Dostoyevsky-literally didn't go to dinner or sleep much for 48 hours while I plowed through it, this was when I was about 21, don't know how it would affect me now... -
ARCHIVED About Those Rice Chex...
oceangirl replied to Beth in NC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Rice Chex bothered me- no question. I wonder about the cc. I am one of those who's highly sensitive (grr....) but just thought I'd let you know, once I took them out, all was fine again. This is after 3 years gluten-free. Good luck; feel better, lisa -

ARCHIVED Let's Play "find The Cause"
oceangirl replied to skinnyasparagus's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Sweet potatoes are a different family- leave them in for now. When I first went gluten-free (three years ago) I found other things were bothering me as well. For two years I was gluten, soy, corn, dairy, nightshade, legume and nut and egg free. Eventually, everything is back in with the exception of soy. I think you'll be okay with tomatoes eventually... -
ARCHIVED Ups & Downs
oceangirl replied to Jipps's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Jipps, YES!!!!! "Ups and downs" (to put it mildly) are the way it goes for awhile! I am about three years gluten-free and the frustration of the first two years was INTENSE!!!!! And while I've felt the best ever for the past year, I still have an occasional glutening that I cannot trace. Just know it will pass and when you feel that way, go back to your... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Because Of Symptoms, And Blood Test
oceangirl replied to mjhere69's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Mary, When you say your doctor diagnosed you with celiac, did you go gluten-free? If so, has it not helped? I'm so sorry you are having so much difficulty. In your title you say you had positive bloodwork? I do think you must try strict adherence to gluten-free living if this is the case. And I concur that acupuncture is a tremendous avenue for healing... -
ARCHIVED Ttg Questions
oceangirl replied to sallyterpsichore's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You do need to be strict about cc. Also, I've been gluten-free fo 3 years and my tTG JUST got into the normal range, so it may take you more time. I live in a gluten-free house, never eat out, make almost all my foods from scratch and eat little to no grains. I am HYPERVIGILANT! It does take time and there is a learning curve. Be patient and feel better... -
ARCHIVED 9yr Old Son's Bloodwork Still Positive After 1 Yr
oceangirl replied to GFM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi. I've been gluten-free for three years and my TTg JUST got into the normal range. I NEVER eat out, eat only whole foods I make myself and have a gluten-free house! I think for some it takes awhile. Now I am trying to ignore being tested for a time and check in on it in 6 months to a year just to see... Good luck to you and your son. Keep the vigilance... -
ARCHIVED Dedicated Lines For Rice Chex? I Suspect Not...
oceangirl replied to oceangirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you everyone. Thank you, Franceen, for the contact info. Although they do seem "serious", they do not specifically mention dedicated lines. It is difficult for so many to comprehend how serious the issue of cc is for some of us. I remember when first diagnosed not believing it myself until I kept learning the hard way. I may give them a call tomorrow... -
ARCHIVED Dedicated Lines For Rice Chex? I Suspect Not...
oceangirl posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi everyone, I know there's been ongoing discussion re: the new Rice Chex, but, does ANYONE know FOR SURE that they are run on dedicated lines? For those of us who react to one iota of gluten? Thank you for your time, lisa -
ARCHIVED Milk?! Thoughts, Veterans, Anyone?
oceangirl replied to oceangirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you both. No, I don't have a problem with dairy. I was dairy-free for 2 years when I first went off gluten and it's been back in for a year now with no issues. I think this company might have some cc issues because I've never bought this type of milk before. And, yes, the Rice Chex say "gluten-free", though I don't trust much processed food- make most... -
ARCHIVED Milk?! Thoughts, Veterans, Anyone?
oceangirl posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi everyone, I've been gone for awhile working on a Master's degree... sigh. I've also been very well in the intestine dept., but I just spent three horrible glutened nights! The ONLY different thing is some Cumberland Farms milk. Does one have to be careful of milk? Or has anyone reacted to the Rice Chex? I hate these mysterious culprits and I KNOW when... -
Hi, It really shouldn't take too long for blood test results. Call your doctor. Also, is there some reason they didn't do the full celiac panel? (I'm assuming you haven't had that...) lisa

ARCHIVED Hard Candies -help Veterans?
oceangirl posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi everyone, Could those who are particularly sensitive and who've found a good hard candy made primarily with sugar, maybe corn syrup-but not high fructose, and little else but flavoring tell me what brands are safe? Are the starlight spearmints and peppermints made by simoncandy ALL safe? I'd just love to suck on a piece of candy every now and then. ... -

oceangirl replied to cruelshoes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

Hi, It's taken 2 SOLID YEARS gluten -free (And I NEVER eat out, eat prepared food or eat ANYTHING I or my Michael has not cooked for me! Oh, my sister now, too, because she gets it!) for me to get my tTG level in the normal range- 2 YEARS!!!!! Hang in there and, not to be too harsh, but it seems like you might need to clean up some of the variables...

Good job. Believe me, we all understand how frustrating this journey is. One day at a time. You will feel well and be well sooner than you think. And you will have gifts to offer others... lisa

ARCHIVED Hidden Sources Of Gluten...even Lipstick?
oceangirl replied to LeahKristen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, you must check out your lipstick! I use Le Rouge Absolu by Lancome (pricey, I know- but very good). Bare Essentials is gluten-free, too. Good luck. Call or e-mail the companies and they should be able to help you. lisa -
