  1. severe symptoms- me, too! lisa
  2. In one of my "lives" I am a floral designer and I learned a lesson the hard way about wheat stalks. Of course, I was working with a lot of them in a relatively closed environment but, yippee kii yay- it sucked. I'd chuck it. For now, my "wheat symbol" is a cup and saucer my daughter found for me at a thrift shop with a stalk of wheat as the design. lisa
  3. Just a "hello" and "keep safe" from Maine. I've lived through many Nor'easters, one that destroyed my childhood home in 1976, and many other ocean storms. I am in awe and have huge respect for Mother nature! I LOVE New Orleans and hope all will be well, well, well for you and all there! Anxious to hear! lisa
  4. I just need to say, in regard to Eric C's post, that gluten is the protein found in wheat, barley and rye that triggers an autoimmune response in folks with celiac. Sometimes it is tricky to weed through people's intended good advice and get to the heart of an issue surrounding this disease. Read, read, read and ask, ask , ask is my best advice. lisa
  5. I MUST have the "Gluten for Punishment" shirt! Thank you! Irreverence Forever! lisa
  6. Yes, it can take up to a week or more if you get glutened and, yes, you are still in the healing stage. This can take awhile to iron out, but know you are not alone. Read back into posts and you will learn a lot! Drink lots of water when glutened and return always to your known safe foods for a bit.Other intolerances may be showing up as well and for this...
  7. Unfortunately, with this disease there is a huge learning curve. Yes, your house may need to be gluten-free or certainly more strict than it is now. Try keeping a food log with how you feel each day. Write everything down that goes in your mouth along with any changes to personal products. This can be quite illuminating. 3 years later I'm still doing this...
  8. How long have you been gluten-free? It could be that you are not healed enough yet and are still having a bit of trouble digesting the fats in foods. I'm sure those more knowledgeable will chime in. Definitely stick only with those foods that feel good for now. A food log is invaluable. Be sure to document all you eat and how you feel. I've kept one for three...
  9. Pandaman, It took 2 years for me to "work all the bugs out" and figure out other intolerances. And that was with a gluten-free home, never eating out and making all my foods from scratch! Perhaps I was trying to give people some perspective; there are many on this forum who have had similar experiences. Personally, it helps me to sometimes see the long...
  10. Could be the beans and/or the rice. I don't tolerate grains too well and I believe there are others here who find the same. I suspect you are a vegetarian? Maybe you could try to cut back a little on the beans and see if you still have rumbling. It does take quite awhile to figure everything out. After three years I still have random untraceable glutenings...
  11. Good job. It's worth it to feel better, eh? lisa
  12. May I say that it has been said by many members of this forum in the past that a "glutening" can last up to a week or more! Hopefully, others will chime in here. If I get really glutened, I can count on it not being completely resolved for a week. Hence, the paranoia surrounding the evil gluten. lisa
  13. It seems overwhelming at first, but it really isn't the worst diagnosis. It takes time but eventually eating right for you will become second nature. It is inconvenient, but it's not a death sentence. If you were very sick before diagnosis you must know the relief of finding out you can do something about this. For me it only took 35 years for them to correctly...
  14. It can take quite awhile to heal and other intolerances may show up first. It has taken me 2 to 3 years to feel REALLY well and I had lots to learn in that time. I'm sure it must be so hard with little kids; hopefully your husband will come around. Don't be discouraged; you may go up and down for awhile.I eat only whole foods I make myself (or Michael makes...
  15. After repeatedly getting glutened for a year we have a gluten-free house except for the rabbit pellets. Cats and dogs gluten-free. I just kept getting sick and my kids, who are older- daughter leaving for college in a week and son who is 15 and a half- offered to have a gluten-free house. They eat gluten outside or in the garage. Spousal Equivalent also;...
  16. I think all kinds of pains are possible. I'm assuming the crab cakes were rolled in some flour or some gluten. It is best to eat only what you make while you are healing. Drink a lot of water and it will eventually pass. I have horrible abdominal pain from gluten amongst other symptoms. Feel better, lisa
  17. Yes, it is a painful journey sometimes for the first two years... discovering other intolerances and learning where all the hidden gluten is- it can be UNBELIEVABLY discouraging! Hang in there and just keep playing "detective", because you'll find sources of gluten that you'd never guessed were culprits! Keep reading this board and asking for help. There...
  18. Oops, sorry- use about a cup of whipping cream for that amount of flavoring but you can really play with this recipe- it's very forgiving. lisa
  19. Wanna make your own ice cream, safe as can be, in about 15 minutes? and it's INCREDIBLE! Okay, do this: Choose a flavoring: 1 teas. gluten-free vanilla, 2 tables. blueberry, raspberry, grape jam, grind two teaspoons citrus rind, whatever... With mixer, combine with 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar, depending on sweetness you like. (add a few tables. of water if...
  20. Tapioca bothers me- no doubt. No gluten, just a reaction to tapioca. lisa
  21. Allison, "Glutenings" are worse around the time of menstruation for any people on this board, I believe. But, if bloat and pain persist after removing gluten I would consult a Gyn just to check out ovaries and other potentially troublesome female organs. lisa
  22. Have you been completely gluten-free for awhile or no? If so, have you checked all personal products- shampoos, make-up, soaps and all? The bloat is common with celiac but should be better as you eliminate gluten. Of course it could also be other intolerances showing up- you may need to keep a food log for awhile to test for this. If you are female, you may...
  23. Lancome's 'Le Rouge Absolu" line is gluten-free. Knowledgable staff in New England. lisa
  24. Hi Meline, I'm sorry you're having trouble with cashews. I wish you could get your hands on some Planter's because I am HIGHLY sensitive and have been doing well with these for over a year now. If you can't find this, can you buy nuts in the shell? Almonds are yummy and walnuts and filberts, too! I love Greece- my father's family is Greek and live in Athens...
  25. Hi, welcome to the board. 2 years after being gluten free I added in hard cheddar cheese with no problem and three years later I eat Greek yogurt every day, and can have all dairy with no problem. It may be shorter for you- everyone is different. I cook everything myself from whole foods (not the store, meaning "natural state" foods) and always bring my...
