  1. I hear you, Marlene. This is something I'm still navigating. I feel that I have a large "FREAK" sign on my forehead when there's ever a social event revolving around food. I hate being different and hate the attention from being different, and answering all the same questions, seeing the same ''glad it's not me'' look in people's eyes. Melie
  2. I've been having ''Liquibowels'' for a week now. I assume I got glutened last week because we had contractors in our house all last week so I ate many restaurant meals. But this week I have been at home, back to my normal food routines, and the problem persists. Usually when I get glutened I will have loose/liquidy stools and cramping 1 time the next day...
  3. Wow! Thank you for sharing this recipe...it sounds so yummy, I am definitely drooling in anticipation of having REAL fried chicken!! Melie
  4. What are the iron shots like? I have heard they are painful and can be dangerous, so I am scared about that. What reactions did you have to them, and how quickly did you feel better? It seems I'm not alone with this prob! Melie
  5. Hi All, I am so frustrated! I have pretty much been anemic as long as I can remember (even have paperwork from tests run at age 12 showing anemia) I am always low, and I have been taking 50 mg a day (3xs the daily requirement, which is 18 for women my age). I started the gluten-free diet last April as a last ditch try b/c the anemia wasn't resolving...
  6. WASHINGTON - Foods made without a protein found in wheat, rye and barley could be labeled gluten-free under a proposed rule released Monday by federal health officials. ADVERTISEMENT The proposal would allow companies to voluntarily flag foods without the cereal protein, which can cause inflammation of the small intestine in the estimated 1.5 million...
  7. The clip is also on Youtube: Open Original Shared Link the clip is 3:51 long, a very nice segment.
  8. I love MAC and wrote them about their lipsticks, here's their reply: Thank you for taking the time to contact us and for your interest in M.A.C. A vast number of raw materials from many different suppliers and sources are used in the manufacture of Estee Lauder Companies' products. It is therefore not possible for us to fully guarantee that...
  9. I got my rice cooker at Costco, under $20, it works like a charm. Perfect rice every time. Melie
  10. Thanks for the tip! On the cover of this month's Sunset magazine is an Angel food cake, frosted with whipped cream and topped with crushed candy cane pieces. It looks so pretty, and it would be so easy to make with the mix you're suggesting. Drool... Melie
  11. Hi Everyone, Since this is the month of Thanksgiving, how about taking a moment to thank (via email or a call) the companies that make your favorite gluten-free items? I recently wrote to the Whole Foods Gluten Free Bakehouse (via their website) telling them how much I love their items and to 'keep up the good work'. The response I got was very warm...
  12. My mom made these for me when I visited her, so that I could have a treat (bless her!), and they are really good! We couldn't believe they were from only 3 ingredients! And they look like normal PB cookies too, with the fork imprints on top. Reallly sweet though, I would maybe cut back the sugar a tad. Give them a try, you'll be surprised and amazed!...
  13. Does the Pamela's bread taste ok even without toasting? I adore the Whole Foods Market Prairie Bread (with sunflower seeds, yum) but it is nearly $9 a loaf, so I'm looking for a cheaper option out there.
  14. To answer Cody's question, an internist or endocrinologist or even a family practitioner can test you for thyroid disease, or you can do a hometest called Biosafe Thyroid Test, it's available on Amazon for about $25. You send in a few drops of your blood that you collect yourself (finger prick) and then in about a week they send you the results, with whether...
  15. Hi Y'all! I have not posted much but I read the boards every day and get so much info and inspiration from you all! I am so new at all of this, and this disease can be so isolating and depressing at times, and I am so thankful to have found a place where people UNDERSTAND!!!! Yay us! As Rusla said, each of you is helping someone whether you know...
  16. Hey Elizabeth, I do not have a 'formal' celiac diagnosis from the med. community, but one from Enterolab, and that combined with my response to the diet told me all I needed to know. It is very possible a healthy spot was biopsied, and if you had a blood test too, false negatives are very real. I also have autoimmune thyroiditis which was diagnosed ...
  17. After about 4 months being gluten free, I had the revelation that I was no longer getting migraines (mine were definitely hormone linked as well) I accidentally got glutened about two days ago, and voila got a migraine yesterday, however not as great in intensity or duration as before. Hang in there!
  18. Welcome, Robina! Just the sort of tip I've been waiting for. I'm gluten-free, DF and soy free too. The egg white option looks great, do you have a favorite flavor? I'm working towards my black belt test and it seems I can never get enough protein in for the tough workouts! Thanks for the tip about Amazon, I love ordering from them. Welcome to...
  19. Thank you everybody... I learned a lot! I guess new pots and sponges and spoons are in my very near future!
  20. I feel for you! It is so hard to set goals for yourself and then maybe not have them work out. Take it easy on yourself first of all, don't push too hard. There will always be other marathons beyond 'this' one! I would love tips on training food too, esp. a high protein breakfast that doesn't involve eggs or meat or dairy or soy...so far I haven't found...
  21. Hi all, I am a bit confused re: the issue of pots and pans. Do I get my own, or is washing in hot soap and water sufficient, which is what I am currently doing. Does the type of pan matter? We have Calphalon, regular stainless steel and cast iron pans. Also, I read something about getting rid of wooden spoons? Can gluten really infiltrate them and...
  22. Thank you everybody. I've gotten some good ideas for where to look in my diet, starches and all the gluten-free substitutes are likely suspects. I don't know why I waste my time with 1/2 of the gluten-free stuff, it really isn't that good or satisfying! I think I need to up my protein and am thinking of going towards the Paleo (caveman) Diet approach,...
  23. Hi, I tried to buy some oats from their site last week, and got a message saying that due to extremely high demand, they are sold out! You can give them your email address and they will alert you to when the new crop is ready. I was bummed about this, but also glad that the demand is there so that they will continue to grow them! I don't know if there...
  24. I should have added that there is the option of sublingual B-12, from what I understand the research supports them as equivalent to the shots. My insurance will pay for the shots, and not an over the counter pill, so I just stuck (sorry!) with the shots. I get my levels checked every 6 mos to a year, they were very high when taking the shots every two weeks...
  25. I have been doing the B12 shots for about 2 years now. I got tired of going to the dr. every 2 weeks to get a shot so I asked them to teach me how to give them myself. Now I do it once a month, I use a 29 gauge syringe, which is what diabetics use, it is so thin and really doesn't hurt. Fast, and convenient! You might ask your doctor about this option...
