  1. I had a similar situation. My daughter started slipping on the growth chart at the same time as solid introduction. There were a few other symptoms that we didn't quite connect at first. Due to her growth issues, celiac was one of the things her ped tested. Since it wasn't a common test, it took over a week for results. She had her blood drawn on...
  2. Well, that's true. She's 9, but can sometimes be irresponsible. In a situation where I won't be there to remind her if she forgets, I think I'd rather not risk her getting ill. It's been a rough few weeks with my girls and their food issues (we have recently discovered a red dye reaction and done quite a bit of travel which included dining out).
  3. My daughter brought home a list of ingredients that she will need for tomorrow's lesson. They are making something with salt & flour dough. Her ingredient was salt-right! I'll have to send everything so she can make a safe batch, but what kind of flour is best for this project? It calls for 16-oz salt, 1-lb flour and water. I'll happily send everything...
  4. What concerns me is that the email mentions it will soon be "marked gluten free" and not that it is becoming gluten free. Would the FDA guidelines that are coming out allow the malt content of Rice Dream to be labeled gluten free? I was thinking some of the information I had read about the guidelines was that there would be a certain threshold to mark gluten...
  5. From my understanding, having the celiac gene means you can (and probably will) develop celiac disease at some point in your life. Having the celiac gene and symptoms would absolutely mean celiac!
  6. My youngest is very sensitive and she eats these all the time. That's not to say that there couldn't be a risk of CC, but in 6 months and several bags of both the animal cookies and ginger snaps, she hasn't gotten sick.
  7. My 1-year-old is extremely sensitive and has been eating these just fine. We had to switch from her Enviorkidz cereal to a vitamin-enriched cereal because she was deficient in several things that are natural only in foods to which she is intolerant. It seems to be working-between her multi-vitamin and her fortified cereal her zinc-deficient lesions are...
  8. They are having a sale right now-$10 off $49 or more (easy to do if you buy a couple bulk items). Use code MEAL1000 to get the discount and look for things that are sold direct from Amazon for free super saver shipping.
  9. I think it was valid in our case to go with a gluten challenge over blood tests. We allow our children to be involved in medical decisions when possible as it is her body and we try to respect that. The blood test is not reliable enough to force it on them when 1 child was already diagnosed. Good result on the diet was enough for me, and them. I didn...
  10. I, too, hesitate to give advice, but I will share our experience. We did the gluten challenge because my kids didn't want anyone to "take their blood out." We took them off gluten for 10 days the first time. It didn't take an entire day to see the reactions after reintroducing gluten. Two weeks later, we tried it again in case it was a coincidence as...
  11. I believe that is the nature of the bag they come in. We have had good luck transferring them to ziploc baggies. Of course, my kids will do anything for a ziploc baggies. They have a strange obsession.
  12. I can't keep my non-gluten free hubby out of the bag! I had wondered about using these for banana pudding. I think I'll have to try it out for myself.
  13. Oh, I know, but it's just not the same!
  14. I found White Nacho Doritos the other day and was thrilled to see they are gluten free. They taste almost exactly like the original gluten-filled variety. Unfortunately, it is a promotional item. They are pitting them against BBQ Cheddar Doritos and only one will go into the full line at the end of the promo. Please, please vote for the nacho Doritos...
  15. I'm not sure how much more proof your husband would need. You just got a positive diagnosis from a medical doctor. Does it matter if it came from the allergist, the GI or a pediatrician? We got our diagnosis from DD's allergy/immunology specialist based on negative skin prick results and positive dietary response. It came from a doctor so that was all...
  16. We use MiDel animal cookies, Envirokidz cereal, Ener-G pretzels, Nut Thins crackers, tortilla chips and mini rice cakes as our replacement for some of the old standbys. I find all of that at my regular grocery store, but I'm lucky to have a Meijer nearby with a fairly large gluten free section. The thing I had to learn was that I didn't have to replace...
  17. I use pure cornstarch. In fact, I just did this the other day for DH while I'm out of town. I coated them in cornstarch (my DD4 did it by shaking chicken tenders in a ziploc bag), fried them and set them on a paper towel to cool. Then I put them on a cutting board in the freezer for about an hour, got them back out and tossed them in a freezer bag to store...

    ARCHIVED Bk Fries

BK fries are officially gluten free and (according to their website) always in a dedicated fryer. The problem comes when the fries are placed in a warmer right next to the onion rings. I don't like BK fries anyway so I can't tell you anything about a gluten experience.
  19. My DD is a celiac vegetarian because her digestive system has never had a chance to develop well enough to process meats. Her doc recommended peanut butter and beans as a way to get some of the same nutrients. Her issue right now is a zinc deficiency. I'm not sure what else is high in zinc so he has her on a vitamin right now. It's just a matter of finding...
  20. I took her to the doctor today and got my answer. She has been very tired and lethargic still, even after 6 months gluten free. I was suspecting anemia since she doesn't eat iron-fortified breads, cereals or meat. He had her tested and she is not officially anemic, but is on the low end for iron and B12. He also diagnosed the rash as a zinc deficiency...
  21. My guilt was never about who gave them the disease. I felt like the worst parent in the world for poisoning my children for so long. DD was 9 when we figured out that celiac was the source of all her problems. It took the baby to figure it all out as she had more classic symptoms. Three doctors over 9 years never figured it out, but I somehow felt guilty...
  22. We like this one: Open Original Shared Link
  23. DD seems to be having trouble with her iron levels, which makes sense considering her diet. She gets really tired all the time, almost like a glutening again even when we know she hasn't been. When I tried thinking back on her diet I realized she had to be low in iron. No more fortified cereals or breads. She can't eat meat. She's not on formula. I...
  24. My 17 month old was diagnosed celiac in October after failure to thrive, constipation and allergy tests due to "hives" after certain foods. She has been gluten free ever since, but occasionally gets a rash on her cheeks. We can't seem to connect it to food, but cross contamination is not out of the question as we do eat out and tend to buy mostly mainstream...
  25. Except for the diabetes, this is my DD exactly! She had oral surgery a few years ago and has several caps on her teeth. I have said for years she is X going on 15! Things have improved greatly with the gluten free diet. Also, my younger two were diagnosed at a much younger age and have perfect teeth as we have been careful to visit a dentist very regularly...
