My suggestion is to eat lots of fruits and veggies with no sauces, and plain meat. I don't know if you would be allowed to take food with you, as I don't know Customs laws. As far as the bride, you don't get to choose your family, except the one you marry! Your brother has to live with her, so be patient and be friendly! Maybe a wedding in Cancun...

ARCHIVED Thickners?
plantime replied to sally-chippendale's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Potato starch and corn starch are used as thickeners, too. If it says gluten free on the label, then one of the other thickeners was used. One day at a time, one bite of food at a time! I am glad that you came on to visit with us, come back more often! Check out the "getting to know you" thread, we would love to learn about you! -
ARCHIVED Article From Kraft On Their Gluten Labeling Policy
plantime replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When I got to page two, I discovered that I *had* read the thread before! I don't know how I missed Karen's post, it must have been a !!!DUH!! moment for me! Moore's marinade, which I used to use on brisket, was made with soy sauce, so I started avoiding it. My family wanted brisket not too long ago, so I picked up a bottle, thinking I would cook... -
ARCHIVED Article From Kraft On Their Gluten Labeling Policy

I haven't read all of the thread yet, I just want to reply to this. If awards were given to companies for this, it would be something they could put up on their walls. They would get "bragging rights", like a "Good Housekeeping Seal Of Approval". It tells the company that people are paying attention, and that t heir efforts are noticed and appreciated... -
ARCHIVED Fritolays List Is Updated
plantime replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The light nacho cheesier are gluten-free, too. Maybe they made them lower calorie just by leaving out the wheat! Either way, I will have to try them. I sorely miss my Doritos Nacho Cheesier! I will have to ask my kids to help me find the rollitos and the light. They know all the good places to find different flavors of chips. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Hand Cream

I never thought that different types of dispensers would have different formulas, but it does make sense. Stuff in a pump bottle would have to be thinner than stuff in a tub, just so it can come out the pump. Thanks for the note, Paula. It is something I will have to remember. -
ARCHIVED Fritolays List Is Updated
plantime replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you, celiac3270! I love to eat Fritos regular corn chips with my chili! I don't even miss crackers as long as I have my Fritos! -
ARCHIVED Dr Suggests Gf Diet Before The Biopsy?
plantime replied to michelle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have to have gluten damage for tests to come back positive. Some people heal in just a couple of months, others it takes even a year or more. I think it depends on how much damage was done, and how quickly your body heals. I don't know why your doc said to be gluten-free before the biopsy, it just seems strange to me. You could find out when the biopsy... -
ARCHIVED Greetings, All!
plantime replied to pmrowley's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Patrck! Welcome to the board! It is always good to here from long-time celiacs, the experience is invaluable. The diet itself is a scientific test, at least according to my kids' science teacher! I felt much better on the diet, so I didn't go for any further testing. I got confirmation by biopsy when the gi doc was looking for ulcers. No ulcers,... -
ARCHIVED Pubpat Argues Against Patenting Of Medical Facts
plantime replied to a topic in Publications & Publicity
GRRRR!!! I hope it gets knocked down! Patent the >test<, but not the information! -
I know how you feel about your dad! You love him dearly, but sometimes he is just a stubborn old mule! My dad is 72, and has no health problems. He knows that I have celiac disease, but he doesn't understand the issues with cross-contamination. If I am not standing over the food, stirring it myself, he will use the same spoon to stir mine and everyone...

I don't think we should start another one. There is no reason why we can't use that group, and even reach out to the members that are already there. By joining that group and posting here, we expand our own support base for help. It would be a waste to not utilize what is already available to us.

Thanks Erica! I'm going to have to see if Fox Farms has some next week! Shame on me for assuming it had rice without reading the label first! I made my pancakes last night. Instead of making one big one, I made two small ones. I ate one and froze the other. I'm eating the frozen one now, after heating it in the microwave. It's tough and chewy. I will...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Hand Cream
plantime replied to jmj0803's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mary Kay Cosmetics has a Satin Hands set that is gluten free. If you want to try it, but don't have a consultant, I am a MK Beauty Consultant. I became one so that I could look up all of the ingredients! -
There is definitely no shame in taking meds that help you help yourself! celiac disease causes so many problems, that it is good to get help with some of them.
-
Stopping Lexapro suddenly can have devastating side effects! I don't know about the other meds, but please talk to your doctor before stopping them!
-
AJ, you are meaning that it made you feel absolutely psychotic? It is good to know that it has that side-effect sometimes, before starting to use it!
-
-6 pounds, Erica! That's fantastic!! I can't use most ready-made mixes, they contain rice, which I am allergic to. I make three small pancakes each time, I just won't be able to eat them all. I am going to try freezing two of them for another time. I do it with regular pancakes for my family, then they just throw them in the microwave for instant breakfasts...

ARCHIVED Weight Watchers "truth About Carbs"
plantime replied to SharonF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Banquet TV Dinners are an option. I called ConAgra and was told that all Non-gluten containing meals are fixed first, on clean machinery. If it has wheat or gluten in it, it will be listed in bold letters on the label. -

ARCHIVED How Long Before Post Appears
plantime replied to bklyn's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Also, around noon your time might not be noonish board time. I don't know what time zone the board is set for. -
I went to the Yahoo group, and one of the ladies has figured out points-values for some of the gluten-free flours. I figured it all up, and just one of my pancakes is around 10 points!! And that is without butter, syrup, or jam! I was eating one every day, and some days two! ! I will have to make smaller pancakes!

ARCHIVED Gf Ravioli
plantime replied to Roo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If we could figure out how to make them, perhaps we could also make them in advance and freeze them. Has anyone tried canning anything like this? I like to make up a large kettle of my favorite beef stew and can it in pint jars for "instant" food. I am at home, I really need to get my act together and start experimenting more in my kitchen! -
Welcome to the board! Feel free to ask questions, even the embarassing ones. We have either been there/done that, or are going through it now, so there is no judgmentalness! celiac disease is hard to cope with at first, but it does get easier with time. You will get so used to reading labels that you will find yourself reading labels for complete strangers...
