  1. I think one of the challenges in getting family and friends to take this seriously is that many people have a really tough time understanding how what we eat impacts our health. If you have a condition that requires surgery or medication, it's much easier to be taken seriously.
  2. I have similar problems, and I just need to vent a little. My job depends on my abilities to think critically, and respond immediately, articulately, and eloquently. How in the heck can I do that when my brain isn't functioning properly and my brain-mouth coordination is dismal, at best? I do trip over my tongue, can't think of the words I want, lose...
  3. I don't understand how ANY medical condition of the digestive system can NOT have something to do with the foods one is consuming. I heard the same thing 13 years ago when I landed in an Eastern European hospital 6 months after arriving (and drastically changing my diet to eat like the locals). Strange!
  4. I was a vegetarian off and on for many years. During the "off" years, I still avoided pork & beef. However, shortly after going gluten-free, I started having huge protein cravings. So, I eat LOTS of chicken, and occasionally have buffalo. The only other time I had a craving for red meat was when I was pregnant and very anemic. I'm not currently anemic...
  5. I had sinus problems for almost 10 years prior to being diagnosed in October. For 4-5 months prior to my diagnosis, I mostly stopped eating wheat because I discovered that avoiding wheat allowed me to stop taking Claritin. I think this is one of the clues that prompted my Dr. to test for Celiac when I was suffering from chronic fatigue. Since going gluten...
  6. I make my own gluten-free cornbread, cut it up into cubes, then add celery, onions, apples, pecans, and tons of sage, thyme, and marjoram. This is what I made even before I had any clue about having celiac. My family and friends love it!
  7. Interesting! I haven't actually noticed any blisters, but I get intense itching in that exact location when I get glutened. Strange...

    ARCHIVED "the Trigger"

Much like Helena, I probably have had this most of my life. Perhaps it was triggered by mono at age 14 (although celiac not diagnosed until 2 months ago at age 51) - I didn't even have any allergy problems until after having mono. All of my adult life, I knew I had food sensitivity issues, but had a hard time identifying them. Over the years, I became...
  9. If the previous suggestion doesn't work, I would seriously consider changing doctors. If this doctor isn't listening to you, what else is he missing? Once I finally realized that my symptoms were serious enough to share with my doctor, she investigated all sorts of things. She's the one who suspected Celiac, not me, despite the fact that my primary symptoms...
  10. I was diagnosed based on the blood test (Gliadin IGA 106, normal is <25), my debilitating symptoms, and positive response to the gluten-free diet. My doctor didn't think the biopsy was necessary - she also knew that I didn't need biopsy results to convince me to stick with the diet. Yup, maybe a new doc is a good idea.
  11. I think it's a great idea to make your house gluten free. I sure wish I could do that! I have no temptation to eat anything with gluten - that's not my issue. I have a husband and two teenage daughters. Both daughters have been tested, and have "equivocal" results. One is trying to go gluten free with me because she has SOOOO many symptoms. The other...
  12. You bet I'm paranoid! I nearly lost my job over this Celiac stuff, since my main symptoms were chronic fatigue and "brain fog". I just started back to work after more than 2 months on medical leave to figure out why I was always getting sick and was on a steep downward spiral. Now I have 3 months to prove that I really can do my job, which involves critical...

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

I just want to offer a little balance to the Dr. debate. I know that many have been VERY frustrated with their docs, and had a tough time getting diagnosed. But I would like to voice my deep appreciation for my family practice doc who decided to test me for Celiac. In response to 9 months of increasing crushing fatigue, repeated bouts with mild "viral" cruds...
  14. I hear you! Today we had our office holiday lunch. Quite a spread of beautiful food, and the only thing I found that I knew was safe was the bottled water. LOL! Fortunately, I brought my own food so I could at least eat with everyone else.
