  1. Yes, the American Indian Museum restaurant is great. I eat there whenever I go to the Smithsonian, even if I'm going to another museum. Another couple favorites of mine in the city are Jaleo's and Zantinya. Both seem aware of gluten issues. One is a tapas place and the other does mezze. Both are close to the National Portrait Gallery, the Spy Museum...
  2. That is a tough one. Is it possible you had something with casein or a caseinate as an added ingredient? It wouldn't necessarily show up as dairy. I know a number of soy cheeses have casein in them; rice cheeses too. I recently saw a study about an antigen making its way into breast milk, in this case gliadin. Open Original Shared Link How long...
  3. Sugarmag, that vodka sounds interesting. Is it commonly found in bars? And, I didn't mean to imply that the shared equipment warning actually STOPPED me from having some of that chocolate The only time Trader Joe items with the warning have affected me was with brazil nuts. (And who knows, I might be sensitive to them. This is the first time I had more...
  4. What search did you perform to find these? I've tried before to find information on DQ1, but I only find a reference to one study (and not a complete abstract at that). Do you happen to have any links on this subject?
  5. From what I've now read, some of the yeast does escape the filtering. But distilled alcohol seems to be safe. I'll guess I'll just have to see how I react. If I don't notice any changes it will be hard to continue ... My test result was an 11 and I don't know if there is a margin of error (10 and above is supposed to show an intolerance). I asked about...
  6. Am I stupid or what? I'd been putting it off because I didn't want to know the answer. Back at the beginning of this year I tested as intolerant to yeast. I took out products that listed yeast in the ingredients, but didn't notice any difference and so went back to them. Meanwhile, I never cut out wine or gluten-free beer. I mean, they take the yeast...
  7. There IS a great deal of inconsistency in the use of terms. To my mind, something is an allergy if your immune system responds to it. It doesn't make any difference if it is immediate or delayed onset, IgE mediated or not. But many doctors will only put the label allergy on something that is immediate onset and IgE mediated -- the sort of thing that...
  8. You HAVE taken out more than wheat, right? It can take longer than 3 months to get completely better. I know people usually notice some change earlier, but I've read of folks who said it took longer. Your improvement could also be complicated if you are accidentally glutening yourself regularly (do you scour labels, checking out "flavors," etc., eliminate...
  9. I agree with Ursa Major. Once you hit 10, it isn't supposed to matter how high your score is. The only test where the absolute number matters, I believe, is the malabsorption score. Did you happen to have that test done? If you do, it gives a baseline for measuring later progress. At least, Enterolab wants folks to do testing one a year to check. ...
  10. That's interesting. Do the doctors have a theory as to what your inner ear problem is, that is, the mechanics of it all? I ask because I have suffered from a balance disorder myself. It is called mal de debarquement syndrome. Following a long boat trip, flight, or bumpy bus ride (the initial problem was the worse and followed an ocean cruise), I would...
  11. I'm glad to hear there is a store that doesn't hide the ball! I'll have to take a look at the prenatal vitamins, although that would probably throw my husband for a loop
  12. I would add that there have been some diagnosed celiacs that don't have a "celiac gene." It isn't common, but it does happen. So a gene test can't even rule out celiac. The blood testing for celiac isn't that sensitive, I don't think. In other words, there are plenty of false negatives. If you had a positive stool test from Enterolabs in addition...
  13. People have mentioned supplements before, but I didn't make note of it because I thought I had it covered Of course, they might be relying on companies saying "soy free" when it really isn't, too. I guess they think because most allergic individuals (supposedly -- I don't know if anyone has actually studied it) don't react to soy lecithin, it isn't really...
  14. Before the labelling law went into effect, you could have hidden soy in foods, as in: flavorings, hydrolyzed protein, vegetable broth, vegetable starch, etc. However, with the new law, the presence of soy in food has to be identified. Soy is all over. You have to read labels. When you are in a restaurant, avoid soy sauce, miso, edamame, tempeh, tofu...
  15. Some have problems with lactose (milk sugar); some have problems with casein (the predominant milk protein). If the lactaid pills don't help you and you DO feel better without dairy, then your problem would seem to be with casein. Yes, butter does contain casein, although not a great deal. It does seem like, with my other intolerances, avoiding the items...
  16. I think it likely that I was ingesting small amounts of my hair gel. Once I realized the wheat was in there, I started noticing how often I touched my hair, especially when it was wet. I realized that I just rinsed my fingers after I styled my hair, I didn't carefully scrub under the nails. (If a colander had hide gluten despite washing, why couldn't the...
  17. Yes, this is great. I have to avoid casein, egg, & soy as well, and I'm vegetarian. So it is my favorite restaurant. I would like it better if I lived closer. I come up from the DC area. If I could actually get there as quickly as Mapquest would indicate it wouldn't be bad. But I've never had the traffic cooperate. Also nice is the Roots...
  18. Yes, it does take time. Often more than four months it seems ... or those are the ones who post It certainly took me longer. Some take a year or even two to get up to 100%. I don't know if I'm at 100% yet. I'll guess I'll wait and see if I continue to feel better as time goes on. Have you tried a food diary? You may have another food intolerance...
  19. Just a word in favor of paranoia -- Double-check when they bring your pasta that it IS the gluten-free pasta, especially if you have anything else special about your order. My last time at Maggiano's I talked to the chef and told him I wanted gluten-free pasta. We then had a discussion about what I could have on it that would be vegetarian and dairy...
  20. I actually found some soyfree dark chocolate at my local Trader Joe's yesterday. Be still my heart I still like the looks of those two bars in juliebove's link that have healthy things added in. I would be able to justify eating more chocolate that way
  21. I think the one you are thinking of was what was our fallback restaurant, Cafe Spice. We had a hard time deciding between it and Sazon, going with the latter simply because we hadn't had Venezuelan before and we have Indian all the time. Cafe Spice's menu looks incredible.
  22. My bowels seem to be working better now that I recently cut out soy lecithin. It turns out that I was getting it in my magnesium supplement, of all things. So now I'm doing better withOUT the pills. I suppose everyone knows this, but just to make sure -- supplements and drugs don't have to list allergens like soy. You can't assume they don't have soy...
  23. I've had similar internal symptoms. (My doctors only ever checked for gallstones, so I can't speak to assorted other tests and their results.) I stopped having these attacks, for the most part, when I switched to a very low fat diet. (The "for the most part" comes about because staying low fat at all times is difficult if one eats in restaurants or goes...
  24. A simple question, which calls for a long answer for completeness. Of course, I don't expect you to simply take my word for it. Do your own research. But don't simply rely on what the dairy industry says or what the dairy industry-lobbied federal government or nonnutritionally-educated doctors say. Look at the statistics and the actual studies (including...
  25. I don't have a problem with sugar, which helps a little. But then I can't eat egg and I'm a vegetarian I don't have a great deal of sugar, though. I'm thinking perhaps I better be careful on this one. I eat a wholly plant-based diet with a few exceptions. On special occasions (or on vacation when I might otherwise starve ...) I will have fish...
