  1. OOPS! I meant that is it not just an allergy that will NOT just "go away"
  2. When I explain celiac disease to people they almost always understand (or at least they pretend to understand). I usually say something like; When I eat wheat, rye, barley, and oats it damages my intestines and makes me really sick. That usually gets the point across about how the severe the problem is and that it is not just an allergy and...
  3. Yes, my symptoms are way worse when I'm stressed.
  4. What keeps me motivated the most above anything else is knowing that one day I will be symptom free for the rest of my life! Now that would be wonderful! I've been sick for so long I forget what it feels like to be healthy. coin-op, I'm glad that you feel healthy and found a diet that works for you! Many people, like myself, would love to feel healthy...
  5. I think that if celiacs are eating barley than there's a problem..........
  6. I have also been on the gluten-free diet for a long time (6 months) and still have problems. Gas and bloating are a daily routine now My other symptoms are getting better thankfully My GI doc says that having celiac disease caused me to have an irritated bowel. I personnally think that some celiacs have more extensive damage than others and require...
  7. The enzymes that break down lactose in milk are located at the tips of the villi (in the small intestine). When those villi are damaged by gluten in celiacs, than those individuals are temporarily lactose intolerant. Therefore, when the villi heal, dairy can be re-introduced into the diet. The degree of villi damage is different in every celiac so people...
  8. I have the book: Wheat-Free Worry-Free: The Art of Happy, Healthy, Gluten-Free Living by Danna Korn 2002 This book was a gift from my Mom. It is a great source of info about celiac disease and how to cope. -Carrie
  9. I felt like I had the flu for about 4 months before I started the gluten-free diet. I have now been on the gluten free diet for about 6 months and there are still days when I feel like I have the flu (like today for instance ) I'm not sure why it feels like I have the flu but I hope it goes away for good someday. -Carrie
  10. I hope everything goes well with you on the 13th. Good luck and I hope for good news! -Carrie
  11. When I was really sick last November I was 112 pounds (I'm 5'6.5). After my diagnosis in March I was told that I was underweight. Now after 6 months of being gluten free I am 120 pounds give or take 2 pounds. So I've gained almost 10 pounds and I am a "normal" weight again. -Carrie
  12. Hi, I know I have reactions to milk products. I just don't know if I'm lactose intolerant, casein intolerant, or both! -Carrie

    ARCHIVED Outback

Be careful of the outbak in Kitchener, Ontario. I ate there last week and I got very sick. I ordered from their gluten free menu too.
  16. burdee, Thanks for your input. My GI doctor thought that after 4 months on the gluten free diet that I should be feeling better but I wasn't really feeling any better at all. I was still very sick. It was very dissapointing to try so hard on a gluten-free diet and see hardly any results. I thought I was doing something wrong. Maybe my intestines needed...
  17. I used to think that practically everything I ate was contaminated with gluten because I was getting reactions to almost everything I ate. After 4 months into the gluten-free diet I wasn't getting much better. My GI doctor said that everything I ate could not be contaminated with gluten. Turns out I have both Celiac Diease and irritable bowel syndrome...
  18. At home I do a lot of things to prevent cross-contamination from gluten. I am very sensitive so I have to be extra careful. Here are some things that I do at home to avoid cross contamination. 1. Wipe down counter tops well before preparing food. 2. Check "clean" utensils, plates, and cookware for crumbs before using and wash again if necessary. ...
  19. If a celiac pill came out I would probably only use it to avoid cross-contamination when eating out or when eating at other people's houses. I don't know if I would trust it to use all the time. In order to convince me to use it all the time, I'd have to see good scientific results and scientific studies that prove that it works and does not allow any intestinal...
  20. I have sleep problems but I think it might be because of the medication my GI doctor has me on to help prevent my permenant diarrhea. I almost always feel like I took a handful of those non-drowsy over-the-counter medications that you can get for sinus problems, flu, colds...... I am so wide a wake at night I find it very hard to get a good nights sleep...
  21. I had joint pain in my knees and hips before my diagnosis in March 2004 and up to about 2.5 months after being gluten free. I haven't had anymore knee/hip pain in the last month or so. I guess it takes awhile for the body to heal. -Carrie

  25. I think that this is a very good question. I react to the smallest traces of gluten and I will be sick for at least a day. My concern is also about cross contamination for example, Some flavors of lays chips are gluten free but there is a risk of cross contamination. If I eat the gluten free lays chips I get sick from the cross contamination, but...
