ARCHIVED gluten-free Diet Helps, But Symptoms Still Present
mftnchn replied to luciddream928's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am in agreement with what has already been posted. Along with that, there seems to be a huge variety in what works for each person beyond gluten-free. Since you are still well within the 1-2 years of healing, it could be just sticking it out and waiting is an option. That said, there's a few things that can be done test wise to try to help figure... -
I'm still struggling with nausea off and on. Some of the factors I have found involved are h pylori infection, need for digestive enzymes, healing process component, allergy/sensitivity, and generalized sensitivity in the whole GI track as my body adjusts and tries to heal after many many years of eating gluten and perhaps other factors. Since my doctor...

ARCHIVED Leaky Gut Causes Gluten Intolerance?
mftnchn replied to Yoekie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yoekie, Not sure but it seems like the testing you had was for allergies to gluten, I don't see the testing that is more specific to celiac. However, now that you are eating gluten free, both the blood tests and biopsy are not going to be that useful. I'd be concerned too that your doctor has ruled out villi damage without further exploration. That... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
GFlady, so sorry this is tough, but I agree, hang in there as it is worth it totally!! Yes, the first week I had huge shifts with BMs. I tend toward C, I had C, D, weird changes in color and consistency, and a ball of what had to be worms, sorry TMI. By the second week I felt hugely better. With the candida you might not want to, but what I did is... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I don't think I would assume that training for dietitians would include SCD/GAPS, like it would diabetic diets etc. Its so unfortunate. I wonder, if there are SCD groups like there are local celiac groups that might be helpful. It is very hard but I am getting the sense that in adapting SCD to each of us individually, we have to test things out ourselves... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm having trouble posting, I posted this once but it disappeared, so will try to post one more time before I give up (sigh). Several on the thread have mentioned bloating problems. The following is a quote from another online source, where a person on SCD for 5 years explained something about bloating. I found this quite helpful. -

For those still having bloating, I found this on another site, from a person who has been on SCD 5 years. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Mia that is the test that I had, although my test said "sugars" instead of "starch". The starches should be digested high in the small intestine and broken down to single sugar form and absorbed. The enzymes to break the starch down to the single sugar (monosaccharide) form are made in the villi (at least some of the enzymes, I'm not an expert so I don... -
ARCHIVED Your Input On Fatty Stool
mftnchn replied to KenzieGirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sounds like typical malabsorption and fatty stools. Being off gluten even for a short time, and even gluten lite could effect your blood tests. Be sure they do all the recommended tests. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Your English is beautiful, no worries! The book should be very helpful preparation. I chose to follow the chart posted on www.pecanbread.com in terms of which foods are usually easier to digest; there are stages posted there. The diet doesn't require the stages, but its just a helpful guideline if you are sensitive. I'd try to do 3-5 days of intro to... -
ARCHIVED Major Sleep Disorders And Celiac
mftnchn replied to citykatmm's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My sleep issues were persistent for several years though they did respond to a small dose of Ambien, thankfully. I didn't have improvement in this with gluten-free. I agree with other posters that lots of various nutrient deficiencies can be a factor. I was surprised when I had alternative testing for my meds and supplements and was put on a neurotransmitter... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Michelle, I may not have time this week but if I forget, ask me again for my seed cracker recipe and I'll post it on the other thread. It isn't quite perfected yet, but already pretty tasty. I tried to figure out the recipe after I bought some Pesto seed crackers at my doctor's office. They have a basket with these, maybe a patient that has started a little... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
MsLee, You might find it quite helpful to read the www.pecanbread.com site and the stories there. Many of the children on SCD had to be extremely restricted on the diet initially, but make progress clearly. If children can survive that, I would think it would be okay for you, at least for several weeks until you have a chance to decide if this will truly... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Welcome GFlady and MsLee! I agree that this diet has been very satisfying, much much better than when I have done low carb in the past. There is an adjustment process. Some have been able to jump right in to the full SCD allowed food list. Others of us seem to truly need to do the intro and follow a very slow adding of foods. At first I did a lot... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Stool Test
mftnchn replied to coldnight's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with Laurie, Enterolab can be valuable when you carefully consider what it offers and your own situation. The gold standard is great when a person fits it, but many of us for one reason or another are left with a more nebulous situation in terms of a final diagnosis. And there are limitations to the "gold standard" approach, too. I did Enterolab... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks for the link, Nora. I really liked the summary about the SCD. It was well written, and mentioned that some celiacs do well with only gluten-free but many do not. Yes, they need to be strictly gluten-free but that is not adequate to heal. I really appreciate those people on this board who are willing to consider the bigger picture, because many... -
Glad you posted that update.

Since I'm from PDX and my daughter is now gluten-free this is interesting to me, and I'd also like to know what you gained from the visit. WestyPDX, offices and office personnel can be very off-putting. It is sometimes hard to know whether to persist through it to get to the practitioner I want to see. Sometimes it is worth it, and sometimes it is not...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Do you tolerate seeds, and tomatos? I put together a seed cracker recipe that I like quite well, but I am not handling rougher foods yet so I haven't made it again. You can also google raw food crackers, there are a lot of recipes out there. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I do, Michelle. I don't get the burning thing though. I get very fatigue and flu-like after eating squash for a few hours. I am going to experiment later with another variety of squash and see what happens. Sherry -

Pele, is the Trader Joe's safe with regard to cross contamination of gluten? -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Great, Ken. Thanks for posting. I saw references to the diet and looked at them briefly early on but passed it off as "too strict." However, I have found it a very satisifying diet and much easier than the low carb I did in the past. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Right, Pele. For me the two more expensive items are almonds/almond flour and honey. The rest is more time intensive than higher on the budget. And so many things are eliminated that are processed and thus more expensive per weight and food value. -
ARCHIVED Sagging Bread And Cake-any Tips?
mftnchn replied to Spartans1960's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
With yeast breads I have found the yeast is important, using regular yeast rather than quick acting. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'd say yes for sure on the cleaner teeth and less plaque. I'm also thinking a maybe about constipation. Because I am taking Humaworm that has senna and maybe some other things in it, I need to wait and see what happens when I get off it (with the constipation). I'd say it might help with the halitosis. Be sure you rinse well and brush all the surfaces...
