  1. It sure is overwhelming. For awhile, you will just keep running into all of the things you can't have, and you'll go to familiar restaurants where you'll see menu items that you used to love. I've been on the diet for about five weeks now, and I guess I am fortunate to have had so many awful symptoms, because, truthfully, I am pretty happy just to be feeling...
  2. If that ever happens, I will fly straight to New York City and eat out at Da Nico's. That would be sooooooooooooo awesome!!! Next, I would fly back and drive to Wooster, Ohio, where I would have a Coccia House Pizza. Then I would find somewhere that serves vegetable tempura. After that, I would go to the Olive Garden and have their eggplant parmesan....
  3. I should probably knock on wood, but I have had really good luck with fruit salads. Just make sure they don't give you the muffin. It's a really good time of year for fruit salads, too. Yum.
  4. -------------------------------------------------- At our school, we tread really lightly around our parents. They've failed numerous levies and can get upset about the most minor things. One time someone wrote a letter to the paper saying that she had seen lots of new cars in our parking lot, so obviously the teachers didn't need a raise. A favorite...
  5. I get so nervous when a parent tells me that something is free of a particular allergen. With my girl who had the peanut allergy, that was pretty obvious, and most parents knew her from the year before. I also had a kid who reacted badly to caffeine and couldn't have chocolate. Again, this was pretty much a no brainer and lots of parents sent in a treat...
  6. --------------------------------------------------- You reminded me of the time one of my students gave me a rose milk lotion for Christmas. I had no idea I was allergic to it, so I lathered it all over my body....groan....and I got hives all over my body.
  7. Hi, I've been wandering about this for months! I started getting the hives in the fall, shortly before I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. My doctor said that it was part of the fibromyalgia, which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I think she should have further investigated that symptom. Anyhow, my hives take the form of welts that look like...
  8. ------------------------------ I'm sure you're already aware of this, but there's an online organization called The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (Open Original Shared Link), which clearly defines the school's responsibilities in regard to kids with food allergies. To access the entire website you may need to be a member, but I was able to bring...
  9. I am also a teacher and I disagree with this statement. When notified that a child has a food allergy or a food intolerance I send home a letter to the parents (part must come back signed) that states that because of a sever food allergy/intolerance all "special treats" will have to be planned. Yes I have had a FEW parents bring them without notifying...
  10. Hi Sarah, I have some ideas here that might shed some light, as I have had symptoms for 42 years and just recently went on a gluten-free diet. First of all, I have been absolutely amazed that normal digestion is a quiet process. For 42 years, I have always felt some type of background discomfort, turbulance, or outright pain after I ate. Also, I have...
  11. Does she like the squeezable yogurts (don't know if they're gluten-free), strip cheese, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter on celery, hummus (check it first- some are okay, some are not) with gluten-free crackers, apples with peanut butter, gluten-free crackers with tuna or chicken salad? I have not found any energy bars that are gluten-free, but I haven't...
  12. Okay, I'm a second grade teacher in Ohio. I will give you my two cents. Unfortunately, teachers do not always know when special treats are going to arrive, so it's your responsibility as a parent to provide a stock of treats so that I can give them to your child when a "surprise" birthday treat comes in from another parent who doesn't plan ahead very...
  13. Don't forget that you can prepare dinners in larger amounts and freeze them for future use. Just make sure to write the date on a piece of tape and secure it to the container. Do you know how to make hummus and stuff like that? You can buy things like gluten-free crackers, which are kind of expensive, but make them go a long way by eating them with things...
  14. The nicest scar I have is the one I got as a wee one to correct a birth defect in my neck. It has always been very thin and faint, even though I know it was major surgery when I had it done. The skin of little kids is so pliant that it heals very nicely. By the way, what is DH?
  15. You are definitely not old, because you are younger than me, and I am not old, so therefore, how could you be old?
  16. That would be really rough to be allergic to soy. Currently, I'm a vegan, but I am hoping to start adding dairy back into my diet in about 5-6 months (I'm lactose intolerant right now since going off the gluten). I am dependng a lot on soy protein. If I didn't have that, I would have to start eating some type of meat again, probably fish and/or chicken...
  17. Hi, I'll be 50 in January and have had a variety of symptoms since the age of six or seven. I figured out what was wrong with me about a month ago while my family and I were on spring break in California. Since going off of the gluten, my digestive tract is unbelievably quiet (I am still fascinated by this), my ADD symptoms have improved considerably...
  18. I am a second grade teacher at a suburban school 20 miles from Cleveland. I have taught second grade for six years and special education for 20 years before that. I have been married to my husband, Kent, for 26+ years, and we have an amazing 18-year-old son, Adam, who is one of the funniest, brightest, kindest, and quirkiest people I have ever met. He...
  19. I read somewhere that there is an increased risk, but I don't know the percentages. Better safe than sorry, though. I would head to a doctor.
  20. Aha! The oats did it for me, too, at the end of my first week of being gluten free. I was very disappointed, because I love Cheerios and oatmeal.
  21. Interesting. I had a Lara bar a little while ago, and my tummy is quiet as a church. If the bar had had gluten in it, it would have been very dangerous for me to light a match in here. However, all is very quiet here in my recliner. I can't explain what happened to you, but maybe you're allergic to one of the other ingredients.
  22. I am a second grade teacher, and I find it unbelievable that school officials would respond in this way. You gave them plenty of advance notice to make arrangements/provide you with information, and they really dropped the ball. So many times I have parents who spring things on me at the very last minute, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate parents...
  23. I think a lot of us are pretty pissed off. I have had this problem since I was six or seven years old (I used to sob nearly every night in pain), and I am 49 now!!! I understand that this condition probably hadn't been discovered yet when I was a child, but in the past 20-30 years, someone should have tried to figure out what was wrong!!! I was told that...
  24. Groan...I'm dealing with this right now. I've been a vegetarian for 30 years, but with my current problems, I am running out of foods to eat. Several of my friends have been suggesting that I should start eating meat again, but I just can't imagine it. I'm not a radical vegetarian by any stretch (one of my friends is a deer hunter), but when I visualize...
  25. Congratulations!! I may be biased , but I think preemies are the cutest babies. (My preemie is eighteen years old, 6' 4" tall, and 160 lbs.) He's leaving for college in the fall. I will keep your little guy in my prayers.
