ARCHIVED First Glutening Episode!
Teacher1958 replied to Babygirl6915's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease

I may be wrong, but having read many posts, it seems to me that "younger" people have a lot more difficulty with this diagnosis. I am wondering if anyone else thinks this may be true. I think that I would have been more negatively affected emotionally/psychologically if I'd been diagnosed 25 or 30 years ago. First of all, it would have affected my social...

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Celiac To You?
Teacher1958 replied to saldwal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your symptoms sound so much like mine. I have had problems for the past 42 years (scary, huh?). I was also diagnosed with irritable bowel, plus "nervous stomach" and an ulcer (no ulcer located). Last October I received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. I had pain in most of the 18 tender points described in the literature on the topic, but the worst pain was... -
ARCHIVED Depressed- Need To Vent
Teacher1958 replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You're right. It is pretty restrictive. Right now I am a vegan on the celiac diet. I'm hoping that I'll be able to start eating milk products again once I am past the 6-month, dairy free period. I get very sad sometimes about all of the foods I can't eat. The fact that it's forever is the big thing that bothers me. Eating was always such pleasure... -
When I first went gluten free, I was completely ravenous. You have to be careful not to fill up on empty calories during this period because that will only make your cravings worse. Your body is finally getting the nutrients it needs from the healthy foods you're eating and is beggng for more. Stock up on foods from all of the food groups, and eat in small...

ARCHIVED Cows Do Not Eat Wheat
Teacher1958 replied to BamBam's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That is very interesting. There have been a couple of times before I knew what was wrong with me that I had bloating that was almost scary. I don't even remember what I had eaten, but I was on some type of antibiotic, which may have made it worse. My abdomen swelled and swelled with gas over the course of an evening, and it was terribly painful. The only... -
ARCHIVED Agitation When Glutened?
Teacher1958 replied to cdfiance's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can totally relate. In the past before I was gluten free and when I get glutened now, I feel very agitated, like I want to jump out of my skin. Since the warmer weather arrived and I've been gluten free, I had forgotten how much I was bothered by freshly shaven legs until yesterday. I felt almost like my legs were buzzing with electricity. I know it... -
I got seriously glutened there last night. I think I know what happened, though. I am a vegetarian as well as gluten free. Our waitress was wonderful and offered to replace the chicken with tofu in the lettuce wrap. I didn't think anything of it until this morning when I was in complete agony. I had to do some serious detective work until the light went...

ARCHIVED Anyone Ever Cheat On This Diet?
Teacher1958 replied to sillyyak's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh well. Yes. Hell ya and good morning to you, too. There are plenty of people who either have no health insurance or health insurance that is so inadequate that they are unable to pursue the tests necessary to obtain an accurate diagnosis. In my case, my health insurance is fine, but I am not going to go through a six-week gluten challenge to prove... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free And Vegetarian?
Teacher1958 replied to yellowcanary's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Truthfully, and this is going to sound strange coming from a vegetarian of thirty years, I almost wish that I could at least eat fish right now. I am gluten free and plan to stay that way. As you are probably aware, for the first six months on the gluten free diet, we are supposed to eliminate dairy products to give ourselves time to heal. We can add the... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
Teacher1958 replied to anerissara's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a colonoscopy in less than three weeks and am really nervous already. My friends say they're a piece of cake, but I don't care for needles or anything invasive. I want to have things checked, though, because I've had symptoms since 1965- nope, that wasn't a typo- 1965. If everything in there is clear, I will be so happy, but once I get a gastroenterologist... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else See Sicko?
Teacher1958 replied to floridanative's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My son went to see the movie and insisted that my husband and I go. I saw "Fahrenheit 911" and was very impressed with it. "Sicko" was equally good. Although Moore is sometimes a little farther left than I, he really knows how to expose the issues. He is sometimes criticized for some of his data, but data from one study to the next can be very different... -
ARCHIVED I'm Starting To React To Corn Almost As Bad As Gluten
Teacher1958 replied to ami27's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have never found a corn tortilla that didn't have wheat in it. You might want to check again. (By the way, if you do know of a corn tortilla brand that doesn't have wheat in it, please let me know the brand. Thanks.) -
Is there any chance at all that you're coming to the Cleveland area any time soon? I haven't found a doctor yet, but I did locate a dietician who has celiac and am planning to go to her. She's at a hospital called Metro Health Medical Center.

I am fed up with doctors! I used to revere them and think that they were so knowledeable, but not anymore. The last time I was there, I had my doctor check my skin because I've been fading in places, so I was pretty sure I had vitiligo (same thing Michael Jackson has). I really just wanted to confirm my suspicions. Well, she said that I do have it, but...

I've spent days trying to figure out why my mouth sores, IBS symptoms, ADD, headaches, and fibromyalgia symptoms have all returned. It was downright frustrating and depressing, to say the least. This AM I was going over everything I had been eating and applying to my body (cosmetics, soaps, etc.) and I was not coming up with any good "leads" until my husband...

I still wouldn't do it, but if you decide to go ahead, ask the pediatrician to prescribe a topical anesthetic cream for your son's arm before he goes in. You just have to find out the site they'll be using. I'm not sure of the particulars, but I am going to do this when I have to have my colonoscopy because IV's completely freak me out. I can deal with...

You know that you are doing everything in your power to keep your baby gluten free. IMO, the doctor is just trying to cover his --- . I'm sure that there are families that are lax in keeping to the diet, so everyone has to be tested just in case. Personally, I wouldn't put him through it. My doctor suggested a gluten challenge for me to confirm the diagnosis...

ARCHIVED New And Not Feeling Brave
Teacher1958 replied to tj1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You don't sound like a wimp at all. You're going through the process of grieving something you've lost, and that is perfectly normal. I've been gluten free since April, and I am still experiencing those moments when I go to a restaurant for the first time since being gluten free and am faced with a menu full of foods I used to love and can no longer eat... -
Make sure to get a bone density scan. It's just an x-ray of the hips that indicates whether you have signs of osteoporosis. I have a prescription to get one, I just haven't had time yet. Because the celiac causes malabsorption (body unable to use nutrients), it can cause a loss of bone, as you aren't able to benefit from the calcium and vitamin D you should...

ARCHIVED How Do You Explain Celiac To Others?
Teacher1958 replied to Walter S's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I tell people that I have a genetic inability to digest the gluten protein. I also tell them that it's like a severe peanut allergy in that even a tiny amount can set things off. I tell them that because of this, if I eat gluten, I am at a much higher risk for other disorders, some of which may eventually be fatal. Truthfully, I learned over the years... -
ARCHIVED Tired Of Coping With Public Restrooms
Teacher1958 replied to Walter S's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I assume you do the "flush as you go" routine. If you need to, just keep flushing to cover up any other sounds. I sympathize with you, as this can be very embarrassing. -
I was suspicious that I was being glutened, but could not figure out what on earth I could have eaten, as I am fanatical about checking everything. I got a new puppy over a week ago, and the symptoms seem to have worsened, especially the joint pain and constipation. My friend says it's because I am exercising (walking) more and my body isn't used to it...
