This is me too. Anytime I did catch something it would also always progress to pneumonia or broncitis. Others would be sick for a week I would be sick for 2 months. I think my body was so busy attacking me with the antibody reaction it was dealing with from the celiac that it had little chance to deal with the 'bugs' that go around. My allergist called...

ARCHIVED Child's Test Results...
ravenwoodglass replied to Irishlass's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you contacted her doctor and told them how severe her reaction is? You should do so if you haven't as some doctors will stop the challenge and diagnose her. I hate to think of her suffering so for 3 months is she doesn't have to. -
ARCHIVED New Gluten Free Level Of 20ppm To Be Accepted Wordwide
ravenwoodglass replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am one of those supersensitive types. What types of naturally gluten free items are you speaking of? I find it hard to believe that fruit, veggies, potatos, plain rice, milk etc have gluten at some level. -
ARCHIVED All-time Faves?
ravenwoodglass replied to Writestuff's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like pretty much everything I get from Kinnickinnick. My favorite is the Italian Bread but I also like thier ready made pizza shells. For a real pizza treat IMHO you can't beat Gluten Free Pantry's French Bread mix for a deep dish fresh made pizza dough. -
ARCHIVED Child's Test Results...
ravenwoodglass replied to Irishlass's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think what is more telling than any blood test could be is her reaction to adding gluten back in. Hopefully when you are done with testing her she will go back to gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Mucinex & Walmart Brand Mucus Relief
ravenwoodglass replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What the Mucinex folks are telling you is that while they don't test for gluten they use ingredients that as far as they know are gluten free. Just because a company won't certify doesn't mean an item is not safe, just that they can't certify that it is without testing. If you haven't had any problems with the item it is most likely safe. -
ARCHIVED Avg Years Lost Or Cut Short By This Disease Any Studys?
ravenwoodglass replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good strat. I find a rice cooker that has a steamer helpful also if you tolerate rice. Wild rice is nice for variety. I like stuff that just cooks itself and rice cookers do that pretty quickly. The gluten free life is hard to get the hang of but you'll get there. Hopefully before long you will feel better than you remember feeling in a long time. -
What my family usually does is to make sure we eat yogurt while we are on the antibiotics. That seems to help keep the gut in balance and we don't get the D that so often comes from taking them. Also make sure that the antibiotic is gluten-free of course.

ARCHIVED Avg Years Lost Or Cut Short By This Disease Any Studys?
ravenwoodglass replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The results of not following the diet are the cause of the elevation in immune dysfunction. If you follow the diet and you stick with it your chances of developing the related disorders is decreased. If you have not already developed any of the disorders associated with noncompliance and you stick with the diet chances are you are not going to develop them... -
ARCHIVED Potato Glucose?
ravenwoodglass replied to tlm3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes potato glucose would be a sugar derived from potatoes and it should be gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Im Worried About My Mom
ravenwoodglass replied to HelpinOhio's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Your right, she does need to go back on the diet. A lot of the issues she is having could well be related to celiac. It used to be thought that people outgrew celiac but that is not the case. While you can't force her back on the diet you can try and educate her. Can you encourage her to come here? There is also a lot out there on the web. The NIH has... -
ARCHIVED If You Wash A Pan Thats Been Used To Cook Gluttened Goods Is It Clean?
ravenwoodglass replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It depends on the pan. If the pan is scratched there could perhaps be an issue. If you feel better doing so then perhaps getting a small saute pan for your personal use would solve the possibility of any issue. -
ARCHIVED "Super Sensitive" Celiacs.....
ravenwoodglass replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
If your husband has offered to live in a gluten free house for while I would take him up on it. You should also make sure that he himself has been tested. There are a lot of diabetics that are also celiac. Some doctors are now routinely testing diabetics for celiac. Your son should also be tested as should all your other first degree relatives. Having... -
ARCHIVED Avg Years Lost Or Cut Short By This Disease Any Studys?
ravenwoodglass replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is actually a bit out there if you try a search using the words mortality and celiac, This first is from the NIH, It is an excellent site to do a search of many things related to celiac. I typed celiac, mortality and NIH in a search engine. The most important thing to note is the first snippet I have bolded it. The important thing is dietary compliance... -
ARCHIVED How Quickly Did Your Symptoms Go Away?

IBS- Within a week-was on elimination diet so very strict only 5 foods at the time Acid Reflux- didn't have Sleep problems- a couple months Lack of energy - a couple months - sublingual B12 helped a great deal Headaches- I had migraines and haven't had one since I went gluten-free, unless glutened Memory Fog- a couple months again the B12 helped... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing From Kimball Labs
ravenwoodglass replied to anniebeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can't rely on genetic testing as far as whether you will for sure be celiac or not. I am a double DQ9, a rare gene in this country, here that gene is considered a gene for RA. It is also considered a celiac gene in the Orient but it only considered a 'sensitive' gene here. I had strong features of Ra and have been in remission since about 6 months... -
ARCHIVED 1 Week Into Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to MissingWheat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Many of us find we need to avoid dairy for a bit because the same villi that are damaged by celiac also are responsible for the enzyme we need to digest dairy. You may want to delete dairy until you have healed a bit more and then add it back in starting with hard cheeses like cheddar and yogurt to see if you tolerate. It is very hard to deal with food... -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Dh?
ravenwoodglass replied to beansmom's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
You have a postive blood test and it sounds like you also have DH. What were the issues that made you get testing in the first place. I thought I could never live without the convienence of fast food also. I soon learned that the difference in health and mood are well worth the trouble. The choice is yours of course, just don't wait until you have a signature... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Purposfully Eat Gluten Before To Test?
ravenwoodglass replied to loxleynew's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I challenged twice. Once after I had been gluten, and just about everything else, free for a month and a half on a doctor prescribed elimination diet. I reacted on day three after adding back in cream of wheat and triscuits for the week I had to add wheat in 3 times a day. After my strong reaction I called the allergist, as i had been instructed to do... -
ARCHIVED New Gluten Free Level Of 20ppm To Be Accepted Wordwide
ravenwoodglass replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's what I was talking about. I sometimes don't put things as clearly as I would like. I was referring to the cumulative effect but I guess I didn't express it well. Thanks to everyone who helped clarify what I was trying to say. -
ARCHIVED Bacterial Overgrowth In Small Intestine
ravenwoodglass replied to kpm2319's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yogurt or saurkraut will help balance the bacteria in the gut. In addition many of us have a hard time with dairy, have you tried eliminating dairy? -
ARCHIVED Biopsies Labelled Abnormal
ravenwoodglass replied to Magician's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If all blood work and testing specifically for celiac is done you should be able to start the diet. Being on the diet is not going to effect the results of the Cat scan other than to perhaps negate the need for one. As for the liver and clotting tests, some people with celiac will have impaired or even autoimmune issues with the liver. Lack of absorption... -
ARCHIVED New Gluten Free Level Of 20ppm To Be Accepted Wordwide
ravenwoodglass replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Either your misunderstanding me or I am misunderstanding you. I gave my opinion to the original question and explained why I simply want clear labels. I just don't want gluten hidden in my food because it tests below the 'offically accepted safe level'. For me low level consumption repeatedly throughout my days would be a problem. If it isn't a concern... -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Dh?
ravenwoodglass replied to beansmom's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Are you gluten free? Had you been gluten free or gluten light before the tests came back and they told you that you didn't need the diet? -
There are some ingredients that are made from wheat but the processing to make the ingredient is such that either no gluten is left or it will test at below a set acceptable level. Most will have no issues with those items but a few will. If you are well healed you could choose to try them and see if you tolerate. Chances are you will be fine but everyones...
