LOL. I want the avocado and the sour cream. Oh well. I'm missing dairy much more than I'll ever miss gluten. I'm gettin' over it though. **cleansing breath**

ARCHIVED What Do You Say To Food-pushing Grandparents?zarfkitty replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs The following response represents my opinion only. As for problem #1: It depends. Are you willing to undergo a little mutual hurt feelings to get them to stop? A lot of grandparents come from a generation where "good eaters" are praised and "cleaning your plate" is even better. I could go either way on this... the grandparents probably aren't going...

Hang in there. I glutened myself in an even sillier way during my first two weeks. I went to PF Changs, ordered off the gluten free menu, asked the waitress intelligent questions, etc. etc. etc. Then when the meal was over, I went on autopilot and ate the stupid fortune cookie that came with the bill. Things are definitely not perfect for me yet,...

ARCHIVED Gallbadder Surgeryzarfkitty replied to Phyllis28's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff I agree with Lisa. Of all the surgeries I've had, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (that's a mouthful!) was the easiest. I did take a couple of "couch days" but I didn't need bed rest. I think I even went out to dinner the night of the surgery (husband doesn't cook; I didn't want to). I didn't take the pain meds except for the first day. Good luck...

ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!zarfkitty replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I think a laptop lunch would be fine for a five year old... just don't pack it as full. For my daughter I don't put anywhere near as much food as I do for my husband. (Actually, I made that mistake in the beginning, and she corrected me pretty quickly.) I haven't tried keeping food warm, but I use blue ice to keep the lunches cold and it works like a charm...

ARCHIVED What Were Your Pre celiac disease Dx Misdiagnoses?zarfkitty replied to burdee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease I had my gallbladder removed four years ago. (Of course, my symptoms didn't resolve after the surgery because gluten was the problem, although the pathologist reported a chronically inflamed gallbladder... lots of gluten intolerant people have gallbladder problems, so it probably would have healed!) With no gallbladder, I get no timed infusion of bile...

If you take what trilliumhunter said and add something dairy (sour cream or yogurt) to it, it makes a really DIVINE dip for chips. There's a restaurant I adored pre-dx that made this dip. But eat my share because I'm CF now. I'll have to try it with soy "yogurt."

ARCHIVED Daughter's Gfcf Birthday Cakezarfkitty replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs How cool is that??!?!

ARCHIVED Daughter's Gfcf Birthday Cakezarfkitty replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Thanks everyone! The cake was divine, actually. We hadn't done a Pamela's mix before and it turned out totally scrumptous. It was also a very "workable" cake as far as torting, filling, layering, etc. I highly recommend! There isn't any cake left, either, and only River and I were in need of the special recipe. All other family guests were gluten...

ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!zarfkitty replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs OK, so this has nothing to do with bento, but I just got done with my daughter's birthday cake. I put pictures in a thread here in the "parents of kids" forum. I feel like we are all getting to know each other so well so I'd share!

ARCHIVED Daughter's Gfcf Birthday Cakezarfkitty posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Daughter wanted a video game themed party for family only. She's turning 8 on Monday. Since the "cool" aunt & uncle are bringing their Nintendo Wii to share, I made a Wii controller for the cake. I'm soooooooooooooooo excited about it!! Cake is Pamela's Luscious Chocolate, baked in 9 x 13 pan, torted lengthwise, filled and iced with homemade "buttercream...

ARCHIVED Moving, Possibly To A Big City...wanting Opinionszarfkitty replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff I have to add a plug for Austin, Texas. Wild horses couldn't make me move. I live in downtown where all the music is. We're the live music capital of the world, we have the Whole Foods international headquarters (largest Whole Foods store on the planet). The University of Texas makes Austin's feel very young and edgy, and we've also got a huge Hispanic...

ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!zarfkitty replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs River's water bottle goes in her backpack, outside the lunchbox. (Her school wants the kids to have an all-day water bottle to stay hydrated, anyway.) Cool containers!!

ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!zarfkitty replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Hmmmm... I haven't looked for a book. I've done most of my research on the internet. I know the laptop lunch booklet leaves a lot to be desired in the way of recipes. I haven't done it yet but here's my next idea: pizza bento Hormel Turkey Pepperoni (gluten free as per hormel website; low fat) spaghetti sauce in the little lidded container fresh...

ARCHIVED Sloppy Joe Recipe? Free Of Gluten And Corn.zarfkitty replied to ArtGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Me, too. But I don't use dry mustard in mine. I think I might start using it because it sounds yummy. You can substitute your safe tomato paste for the tomato sauce in the recipe... just play around with it until it tastes right. Add some water to make up for the water from the sauce. Geez now I want to put sloppy joes on my shopping list for...

ARCHIVED The Dq1 Genezarfkitty replied to confused's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I can't answer this question with any level of authority. But, my daughter is a very cranky, uncooperative, DRAMATIC little girl on gluten. I mean hysterics of gargantuan proportions, completely inappropriate for her age. When we started the diet, her true personality came back.

ARCHIVED Gfcf Birth Control - Advice, Please!zarfkitty replied to kiwi56's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications They have the same active ingredient but Yaz has a lower dose than Yasmin of estrogen. (30 mg vs. 20 mg)

ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!zarfkitty replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Excellent! So how did it "feel" to eat out of it? One of the first things I noticed the first time I used my laptop lunch was that it was so much better than baggies or gladware. It felt like a real meal. I really looked forward to eating lunch. (and I also enjoyed my self-righteous environmentalism since I didn't create any waste with lunch.... but...

ARCHIVED You Can't Do That On Televisionzarfkitty replied to elye's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff I loved the locker jokes, too. I also liked the bus driver. And the "who do ya think's in the burgers" punchline at Barth's. Moose was awesome. I read a whole thing about Christine McGladle back in May. She got a wild haircut and had to wear wigs to keep up her signature hair-do. They had different wigs for slime/water sketches and dry sketches since...

ARCHIVED Gfcf Birth Control - Advice, Please!zarfkitty replied to kiwi56's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I take Yasmin which has the same active ingredients as Yaz but uses 21 active pills instead of 24. I'd like to take Yaz but it's not on my insurance (maybe it will be soon). FWIW, I take my Yasmin 3 packs back to back skipping the sugar pills and so I go 9 weeks without a period. If I could take Yaz I could extend that by another nine days. Skipping...

ARCHIVED You Can't Do That On Televisionzarfkitty replied to elye's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff OMG!!!! Your dad was "Ross?" I loved YCDTOT. I watched it on Nickelodeon in Omaha, Nebraska when I was in elementary school. The kids at my school were always trying to re-enact the sketches during recess. Especially "it must be time for the opposites..." We even used grass and leaves on the playground to be the green slime. Tell your dad his characters...

ARCHIVED Bento Box Saves School Lunch! Onigiri Rocks!zarfkitty replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Yay!!! Those look really great! Next time you make the sushi rice (white or sweet brown) put a little less water than you normally would and after it's done cooking, let it stand 10 minutes uncovered. That should help with the sticky factor. You want it to be sticky enough to mold but you can play with it a bit to your kids' liking. Keep up the good...
