  1. I asked the company about the gluten free label recently. Below is the response they sent me. We've been drinking it....rats! I don't think that we (dd or myself) are that sensitive, so maybe we wouldn't notice. I think I'll have to look at another brand after reading your post, though. Rho "Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding...
  2. Sara, we use the Enjoy Life brand of chocolate chips, because my dd can't have gluten, dairy or soy. THEY ARE GREAT! When I bought them the first time, I assumed they wouldn't be alll that good - that I was "settling" because of dd's food intolerances. That's not the case at all! I like them better than the Tollhouse Morsels that I used to use. They...
  3. Ravenwoodglass - I think you're a double DQ 3 (subtype 9), not DQ 1. My ds is a double 3 also (subtype 7.) He's 12 and his symptoms are only neurological at this point....no GI involvment. It sounds like the same pattern that you had (have.) I hear you about the no dairy, no soy....my dd and I are living that one right now, and it can be limiting. Thank...
  4. I've been having numbness in some odd places - my right mid-forearm down through the hand, my left hand, my left shin and ankle, and the left side of my back. It's always there, though usually worse in the evening, better in the morning. I've had a little numbness and tingling in my hands for a year or so, but it's never been very bad, so I ignored it....
  5. Nope, that's not little at all! Any sense of normalcy that we can claim - or reclaim - is a BIG DEAL! A friend of mine recently told me that the time will come when I'll pass through a whole day and realize that I didn't once think about food as a challenge....I'm looking forward to that! I had my own little/big deal last weekend. I baked a gluten-free...
  6. That's wonderful!!!! Definitely something to celebrate! :-) Rho
  7. You can have genetic testing done through Enterolab. It's not a blood test; it's a cheek swab, painless and easy to do. I believe that there's another lab that also does gene testing; that test can be ordered through your MD. Enterolab testing is ordered directly online, and is not handled through a Dr's office. The gene test won't tell you anything...
  8. Hi Zarfkitty - How awful that experience must've been for you! I applaud your restraint at giving Grandpa a gentle reprimand (and his comment WAS mean!) I'm going through a similar kind of struggle with my in-laws. They don't want to believe that this disease is real and so they refuse to talk about it or educate themselves about it in any way. I even...
  9. Here's a link to an article about gluten sensitivity as a neurological disease. It's by Dr. Hadjivassiliou - there's a lot more stuff by him. Google his name. Open Original Shared Link Nic, my 9 yo dd is a 7, 6 also. She had classic celiac symptoms, and was getting sicker by the week. We didn't have blood tests run because she was already gluten...
  10. I haven't been to this place yet, but my s-i-l, who lives in Hyde Park, highly recommends it. We're planning to stop by the next time we're down that way (we live an hour or so north.) Open Original Shared Link Rho
  11. Danna Korn's "Living Gluten Free for Dummies" book is great! It will get you started in knowing what to look for on labels, which ingredients are safe, which are suspect, etc. I also like "The Gluten Free Bible", but Korn's book is the best "primer." If I could only buy one book, that would be the one. Good luck! Rho
  12. Hi Horsegirl - I just got results back from Enterolab yesterday, too, for my ds and myself. We're already gluten-free, along with my dd, who was the first to be diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity. It's a family affair for us (and many others.) Both my dd and myself also react to casein, so we're gluten-free/cf. At first I found the cf part to be difficult...
  13. We recently took a trip to the west of Ireland (ranging from Galway down to Kinsale, along the coast.) It was a great place to visit. Everyone seems to have an understanding of what celiac means (in restaurants, anyway) and gluten-free food is not hard to find. At some restaurants they had designations on the menus to denote which items were safe for celiacs...
  14. Welcome, Justine. I'm sure we all remember that overwhelmed feeling. You're not alone in that! A veteran recommended to me, when my family was starting out with the gluten-free diet, that I buy Danna Korn's book "Living Gluten Free for Dummies." It's a great book, that covers all the basics of gluten-free shopping, cooking, and general life. I also purchased...
  15. I'm sorry you're in this position. It certainly ought not to be so difficult to get someone - an MD - to listen to you and to try to help your son. We tested my dd through Enterolab also. Like your son, she had DQ 1, 3 (subtype 6, 7.) She was already gluten free when we tested, which is why we didn't go the "usual" route for testing. The Enterolab results...
  16. Oh, yeah, I believe this! I did a South Beach kind of thing - gave up all sugar/flour for a couple of weeks several months ago (pre-gluten-free.) I had SUCH a bad withdrawal - headache for a week (that Advil would not touch), nausea, extreme tiredness, insomnia. I guess I was detoxing. At the time, I blamed it solely on the sugar withdrawal (though in...
  17. I agree! At least they said the word "gluten." I didn't think they were going to at first!! Rho
  18. My dd has her yearly physical coming up. We figured out her gluten sensitivity on our own - positive dietary response - and confirmed our suspicions with Enterolab testing. There hasn't been an MD managing her disease, so my plan is to share everything with my pediatrician and hope that she'll get on board. Dd is doing pretty well without gluten, casein...
  19. A fair number of people here have used Enterolab to test for gluten sensitivity. I had them run the fecal and gene tests on my dd, because she was already gluten free and I didn't want to put her back on gluten to pursue blood/biopsy results. I'm very content with their findings - they showed that she's gluten and casein intolerant, which has been confirmed...
  20. I buy MOST of our food from a regular supermarket. I only buy canned or frozen foods if they have a gluten-free label or it's ABSOLUTELY CLEAR from the ingredient list that there's no gluten added in any form. As best I can tell, I've never glutened my dd or myself with canned goods or spices (I did have to throw away a couple of questionable spice blends...
  21. We have something similar with our dog. As my dd became sicker over the last year (before figuring out that gluten was the culprit), so did our dog. It turns out that the dog also has an autoimmune disorder - possibly canine lupus. I switched her to a gluten free dog food and she's doing much better, to the point that she hasn't even needed steroids. ...
  22. Same here - just over 2 weeks. I understand that impatient feeling. Good luck!
  23. I empathize! That is *exactly* my situation - hubby travels, doesn't communicate well with his parents. It's no fun being the one to have to stand up to everyone, all the time....though I must say it's getting easier for me.... and it's even empowering at times, when I know I've taken the high road and done a good job. Rho
  24. What were/are your specific symptoms? Is anyone diagnosed by bloodwork & biopsy? I'm puzzling over my dd, who had some classic celiac disease symptoms that resolved very quickly on a gluten-free/cf diet, but no DQ2 or DQ8. Rho
  25. I agree with Zarfkitty. The praise for "good eating" is probably a generational thing. My mom tends to do it. I have said to her, on numerous occasions, "She will eat when she is hungry." She gets the point, but later falls back into her old habits and I have to remind her again. I've chosen not to make a big issue out of it, but my mom lives several...
